Publisher's summary

It began as another newspaper assignment, a celebrity profile of the children's television icon. But in Fred Rogers, Texas journalist Tim Madigan found more than a fascinating subject. From their first meeting in 1995, at Rogers's invitation, the two became unlikely friends, a deep and abiding relationship that lasted until Rogers's death in 2003.

In that time, Madigan found Rogers to be much more than the calm and compassionate personality of television. He was a person of unique human greatness who embodied love, compassion, and wisdom his every waking moment. He was the transcendent being who guided Madigan through periods of life-threatening depression and the tragic death of a sibling and helped him heal his difficult relationship with his father.

I'm Proud of You reveals Fred Rogers as a person who deserves a place among history's greatest people. It chronicles male friendship at its finest and most powerful. And it is a book that has already brought hope and inspiration to many thousands of its fans. With this second edition, including a new afterword by the author, the inspiration continues.

Poignant. Profound. Perfect.

I’m not often moved to write reviews, but I feel compelled to honor this beautiful story and profound writing that has touched my soul and moved my spirit. I have already recommended this beautifully written book to my Mr Rogers, I call her Dr Ann. She is my listener, my guide, my supporter. I was deeply touched by the story and moved by Tim’s brilliant writing. And I have intentionally used the word “brilliant” because his talent as a writer shines brightly and stands out as magnificently as the North Star. I look forward to reading more of his work. I was mesmerized listening from its first to last words. Tim’s story and relationship with Fred Rogers is the delicious icing on this masterful cake. I will for certain be going back for a second, and possibly third, piece. Thank you for sharing, and may God bless you! IPOY, Rosie

A beautiful reflection on the life and relationship of men and emotion

Not only was this book a beautiful devotion to God but also an amazing tribute to Mr. Rogers. What a true reflection of the Saint like spirit that Mr. Rogers shared with the world. I find, "I'm Proud Of You" to be the key to so many unspoken words of men who struggle with showing emotion and love outwardly although they all feel it's intensity from within. What a beautiful book this is.

Such an amazing testament

This is a story of how one man can have an indelible and remarkable affect on so many. It is uplifting in its unvarnished tale of loss and gratitude.

An autobiography of a friend close to Fred

If you’re expecting a biography of Mister Rogers, this isn’t it. (There are many great ones out there.) However, these may be my favorite book related to my hero. It centers on a flawed man with a stranger who became a life-changing friend. It’s such a tremendous insight on the impact one person can have. Grab your handkerchiefs; you’re in for a ride.

Absolute poetry on a story of grace, friendship, loss, and family.

I have read and listened to this book. Both times my heart and eyes filled with loving tears of understanding. The shear level of grace and compassion Fred Rodger’s shared with others, the friendships he forged, and the lasting impact it gave is echoed in the writings of Madigan. This book is written with love, honesty, raw emotion, and faithfulness. It is a treasure in any library; written or audio. I highly recommend it.
