About this listen

It's August 1984, and paperboy Christopher Stewart has gone missing.

Hours later, 12-year-old Sammy Cox hurries home from his own paper route, red-faced and out of breath, hiding a terrible secret.

Crystal, Sammy's 17-year-old sister, is worried by the disappearance but she also sees an opportunity: the Stewart case has echoes of an earlier unsolved disappearance of another boy, one town over. Crystal senses the makings of an award-winning essay, one that could win her a scholarship - and a ticket out of their small Iowa town.

Officer Dale Goodkind can't believe his bad luck: another town and another paperboy kidnapping. But this time he vows that it won't go unsolved. As the abductions set in motion an unpredictable chain of violent, devastating events touching each life in unexpected ways, Dale is forced to face his own demons.

Told through interwoven perspectives - and based on the real-life Des Moines Register paperboy kidnappings in the early 1980s - The Monsters We Make deftly explores the effects of one crime exposing another and the secrets people keep hidden from friends, families, and, sometimes, even themselves.

captivating but heartbreaking

the narration is smooth and easy to listen to. I was hooked from the first minute to the last. The story itself is well crafted and heart wrenching. The characters are relatability built and became real as I listened.

Edge of your seat!

From the beginning to the end, the story is a nail biter. The description of the time setting, 70s-80s, gives all the nostalgic feels. The plot thicken, and thickens until the climax blows. I hope to see another novel by Kali White.

Disappointed

I felt like this was just half a book. There really wasn’t any type of conclusion, it just went on until it was over.

Kept me hooked

I got through the book very quickly - it’s easy to listen to. It kept me guessing and there were many potential suspects so I couldn’t predict the ending. So many different ways the plot could have gone. I felt there was a couple loose ends that weren’t tied but altogether I enjoyed it.

Monsters we make

This book always kept me guessing,
It was very entertaining . It’s very sad to me that this is real life for some children.

Edge of my seat

While listening to this novel, I felt engaged and fully present. I was constantly wondering who did what. Very well written and narrated. The narrator did a superb job.
