About this listen
Ghosts have fascinated and haunted us for millennia. They appear in our campfire tales, films, books, and television shows, as well as in our dreams and nightmares. Despite widespread belief in spirits and the popularity of television ghost-hunting shows, scientific evidence for them remains elusive. Investigating Ghosts is the first audiobook to examine the history and techniques of ghost hunting from folkloric, scientific, and sociocultural perspectives.
No mere armchair scholar, author Benjamin Radford's audiobook is based on nearly 20 years of firsthand science-based investigations and research. Investigating Ghosts will entertain and educate skeptics and true believers alike, separating fact from fiction about this timeless mystery.
Topics include:
- Guidelines for scientifically investigating ghost reports
- Analyzing photographic, audio, and video evidence
- Ghost hunting equipment: what works, what doesn't, and why
- In-depth case studies of solved ghost investigations
- Understanding the psychology of ghost experiences

While belief in religious supernatural claims is waning throughout the West, evidence suggests belief in nonreligious supernatural claims is on the rise. What explains this contradiction? How can a society with a falling belief in God have a rising belief in ghosts, psychic powers, ancient astronauts, and other supernatural or pseudo-scientific phenomena? Taking the same anthropological approach he employed in his notable studies of religion, atheist author and activist David G. McAfee turns his attention to nonreligious faith-based claims.

Story
You are a mind reader, born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. It's a sixth sense you use every day, in every personal and professional relationship you have. At its best, this ability allows you to achieve the most important goal in almost any life: connecting, deeply and intimately and honestly, to other human beings. At its worst, it is a source of misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict, leading to damaged relationships and broken dreams. How good are you at knowing the minds of others?

Story
Is everything connected? Can we sense what's happening to loved ones thousands of miles away? Why are we sometimes certain of a caller's identity the instant the phone rings? Do intuitive hunches contain information about future events? Is it possible to perceive without the use of the ordinary senses? Many people believe that such "psychic phenomena" are rare talents or divine gifts. Others don't believe they exist at all. But the latest scientific research shows that these phenomena are both real and widespread.

Story
In this witty and perceptive debut, a former editor at Psychology Today shows us how magical thinking makes life worth living. Psychologists have documented a litany of cognitive biases and explained their positive functions. Now, Matthew Hutson shows us that even the most hardcore skeptic indulges in magical thinking all the time - and it's crucial to our survival. Drawing on evolution, cognitive science, and neuroscience, Hutson shows us that magical thinking has been so useful to us that it's hardwired into our brains.

Story
In the early days of photography, in the death-strewn wake of the Civil War, one man seized America's imagination. A "spirit photographer", William Mumler took portrait photographs that featured the ghostly presence of a lost loved one alongside the living subject. Mumler was a sensation. Peter Manseau brilliantly captures a nation wracked with grief and hungry for proof of the existence of ghosts and for contact with their dead husbands and sons. It took a circus-like trial of Mumler on fraud charges to expose a fault line of doubt and manipulation.

Great book, but terrible audio
Anything great about this audiobook comes from Radford’s words and not the production. Listening to him stumble over words and flipping the pages of his book gets on your nerves, though I tried my best to overlook this cause what he was talking about was so fascinating. That is until, ironically, the part about EVPs, when the audio started cutting out what Radford was saying, leaving us with unfinished sentences. I really hope this audiobook gets a re-recording, cause it’s worth it.
