About this listen

Parenting can be such an overwhelming job that it's easy to lose track of where you stand on some of the more controversial subjects at the playground (What if my kid likes to rough house - isn't this ok as long as no one gets hurt? And what if my kid just doesn't feel like sharing?). In this inspiring and enlightening book, Heather Shumaker describes her quest to nail down "the rules" to raising smart, sensitive, and self-sufficient kids. Drawing on her own experiences as the mother of two small children, as well as on the work of child psychologists, pediatricians, educators and so on, in this book Shumaker gets to the heart of the matter on a host of important questions.

when dealing with a non articulate screaming toddler it's hard to know what to do. it's hard to understand what they're thinking how they're developing we are all not all child psychologist and yet we have children. I love this book for its ideas on how to help Kids. On letting go of filling their lives with activities and learning or else they'll be left behind thoughts. it helps you find places where you can be loose and where you need to tighten up that will best help your kids. the author openly admits that this isn't the perfect set of rules but a good guidelines to start with. Just take what you want and leave the rest.

What a refreshing, helpful book! I loved the focus on letting kids be kids and not forcing supposed "adult" behavior on our little ones. It was enlightening and encouraging.

Terrific Advice for New and Seasoned Parents

My family has been fortunate enough to experience the School for Young Children first hand throughout the preschool years of both of our sons. Heather's book stays true to the SYC philosophy and the narration adds to the modeling of examples in this book. If you are someone who wants to honor your kiddos, model healthy attachment and emotional regulation as well as open communication, this book is for you!!! I can't recommend this book enough. It's been over a decade since my kids were at SYC and this early childhood approach has is still yielding positive results for our kids!

notes: Make it clear that it's to behavior that's bad, not the child itself. Say I see books and toys on the floor rather than "You never listen." Kids accept limits better when the rebuke is not personal.. But rather informational. Explain the object's true function Like "saying the chair is for sitting not standing. The blocks are for playing not throwing"

really new perspective on child rearing

Has changed my perspective on a few things. I appreciated the logic and have already started implementing some of the ideas in my own parenting.

I love this book and bought the hard copy so my husband can read it too (and we have a paper copy for quick reference). So many new tools for me to use. "Take off your adult lenses" is a superb idea to better understand the minds of our little ones. Highly recommend this to all parents.
