About this listen

I’ve lost it. :( The only thing in the world I wasn’t supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It’s been in Magnus’s family for three generations. And now the very same day his parents are coming, I’ve lost it. The very same day! Do not hyperventilate, Poppy. Stay positive :) !!

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents . . . she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

I couldn't get past the the narrator's voice. She simply didn't sound like a young woman about to get married; she sounded more like someone's grandmother. She also didn't do a very good job of varying her voice to help the listener follow the story - at times I couldn't tell the difference when Poppy was speaking aloud vs. words she was thinking in her head, and even some of the conversations between Poppy and other women were confusing/unclear who was saying what.

Normally I love Sophie Kinsella's books, but this one just seemed TOO far-fetched. Why didn't Poppy just get a new phone and transfer over her existing phone number? Who gets a new number whenever they get a new phone? The general premise just didn't fly with me, and combined with the (seeming) little old lady voice of the narrator it made for a so-so listening experience.

Underwhelming

This was a fun storyline. I enjoyed it. I gave an overall rating of 3 stars though because it had too much language for me. The F works was used throughout. I was hoping to listen to it with my teenagers but there was just too much language.

Good book but too much language

My favorite book ever! I enjoy it so much that I have read it 3x in the last year. It's just a feel good kind of story and I can picture a movie...

There are some cringe-worthy moments, but that's what makes it entertaining. Most of us would not do the things that Poppy does, but it is fiction and fun.

Can read over and over

This story was so fun and the narrator did such a good job “being Poppy” that I didn’t want to stop listening. Even though the story takes place over a short period of time, it all seems so real and makes sense. Additionally, I think everyone deserves to have two brothers (or at least one) like Poppy (Re: Flight to Paris). Sadly this will probably become a bit dated as texting and technology advance but for those of use who have and are dating in text dominated society it has some rather poignant realness to it. Overall, fantastic.

Perfect!
