About this listen

Sadie Slade was the love of my life.

I left for college promising her I’d be back in four years. She stayed behind promising me she’d wait. We both broke our promises.

When we bump into each other five years later, my feelings for her come rushing to the surface.

I want her back. She wants me gone.

How quickly my Sadie Girl has forgotten - I’ve never been the type of man who accepts defeat. No matter the cost.

Jack Daniels was my entire life.

Until he wasn’t. Now he’s back and thinks we should pick up where we left off.

I miss the simplicity of what we had. I miss how easily we fit together. Truthfully...I miss him.

But if I allow him to get too close, he’ll see I’m not the same girl he left behind five years ago. He thinks I’m upset about our break up. The truth is so much worse.

3.5 STARS - IT WAS OK

Jack and Sadie had loved each other since they were toddlers, they were sweethearts who were each other’s firsts and planned for a wonderful forever future together when Jack returned from College. Sadie supported Jack’s plans, understood they had to have a four year long-distance relationship and wasn’t personally academic because she had a learning disability which made her a wee bit insecure. However, Sadie looked forward to the day they could be together again.. but somewhere along the academic years Jack lost sight of his motives - and his life goals which included Sadie.. and instead focussed on his educational goals and then on his high-powered career. And unfortunately they drifted apart and finally broke-up for well over a year - then Jack sees Sadie again.. and Jack remembers everything and realizes too late what he had let slip away and eventually lost.

So he tries to rekindle their relationship.. but distance is still a major problem yet he tries.. but time and time again he hits Sadie’s now cold impenetrable walls. However, Jack’s determined.. so tentatively and very very slowly he navigates Sadie’s emotional roadblocks until he finally gets his second-chance.. but along the way he uncovers a terrible secret, he unveils Sadie’s shocking and dark revelational artistic talents.. and he himself muddies the water for a while.

This second-chance emotional rollercoaster of a love story was enjoyable.. however, I did struggle a wee bit with certain parts of the nine hour dual POV storyline. SPOILER ALERT... For me, it was a bit too immediate for Jack to suddenly need and love Sadie when he hadn’t even thought about her in the years before accidentally bumping into her. They each made mistakes in their relationship.. and I struggled to buy into the fact that this handsome, sexy, successful businessman just wasn’t tempted by anyone else in the years after they split up. However, they do eventually deserve their HEA ending.. I just wish I could’ve connected more to their push/pull story, I wish I felt some type of sizzling chemistry, I wish the plot gripped me and I wish it had really wowed me like most of JBS’ other stories have. Trigger alert.. there’s rape descriptions.

Worth a credit? I am teetering between rating this listen 3 or 4 stars.. so I’m safely opting for 3.5.. and, because it’s not under 3, I’ll say yes creditworthy. But just because I felt more drawn-out animosity than love between these two characters and it didn’t 5 star me.. please don’t be put off - because you may love every chapter.
