Publisher's summary

Successful Texas lawyer, Reade Walker, curses that damn song every time it plays, all too aware of the irony of its lyrics. After all, he has been secretly and painfully enamored with Jesse's girl, Gwen, for nearly a decade. It was love at first sight for him, but sadly she's not his girl. She belongs to the one man who betrayed him and knows Reade's hidden family secret. Yet, Reade can't seem to love anyone except the one woman he can't have. Or can he make her mine?

When Gwen Clark's senator husband runs off with his intern and all their money, the ensuing scandal turns her life upside down. Deserted, penniless, and desperate to provide for her six-year-old daughter, Gwen has no one to turn to but Reade Walker. The one man her heart desperately wants, but her pride dreads having to ask for help. Despite welcoming them into his home, it seems like Reade can barely stand being in the same room with her anymore, let alone under the same roof - in the same bedroom. But Gwen is determined to get her life back on track. It is past time to rediscover her own dreams...if only she can keep her aching heart from breaking all over again.

A short listen that I was somewhat intrigued by.

It took a little bit for me to get interested in this read. I'd say I liked the second half a little more once Reade and Gwen progressed in showing their true feelings for each other. Gwen is separated from her husband and in the process of a divorce. Her husband, who's ran off with another woman and left her financially with nothing. Reade has always had feelings for Gwen but couldn't act on them. He's there now to support her and be there for her. Things turn super steamy the more their in each others lives. The narrator did a good job. I liked this read and I'd say give a chance on this listen.

Enjoyed the story and the performance

I really enjoyed listening to this story. The writing is fantastic and paints a realistic picture. I laughed at a few clever comedic lines and smiled a lot while reading this. I felt drawn to Gwen’s pain and desperately wanted to see Reade continue to be a swoony hero. The narrator is definitely a pro and I liked both her rendition of male and female voices.

wish that i had...

I loved this romance read / listen. Great narration, loved the characters and the twists that were just OMG moments! Gwen is such an amazing character - both vulnerable and strong. Reade is awesome as well - loving and protecting and so selfless. This is a wonderful romance, well written with a great storyline with good flow. I couldn't get enough and I hope to get the opportunity to listen to more!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Second chances

This was a story of two people who have always been in love with each other but were separated by her husband Jessie and their ideas of how things should be. Jessie both tears them apart and brings them together only to try to tear them apart again.

Even better than the song!

I listened to this book in one sitting. The story was fun and quick-paced with plenty of romance to spice it up. I really appreciated the personality the narrator put into the characters’ voices. Jesse’s Girl was a delight!

A good story with snappy dialogue. The characterization was excellent from the get go. Actions do speak louder than words after all. The story, especially with the current political arena, plausible. Verla Bond did a terrific job bringing the story to life.

short and sweet romance!

3.5 stars. This was a quick and fun listen. Jesse's Girl is the story about Gwen and Reade who were friends years ago before they ended up going their separate ways. Gwen is married to Jesse, a local senator and scumbag who left her for a younger woman and took all their money! Reade comes in to save the day and help Gwen and her daughter get back on their feet after the scandal. This audiobook was well done, however it was a bit forgettable for me. It held my attention ok, but I didn’t connect to the characters as much as I would have liked. Having said that, I did enjoy Reade's devotion and patience with Gwen and that they got their chance to finally be together after years of longing. This was a quick and sweet romance with a fabulous hero, plus a single parent trope. Grab this for a short and sweet read!

Jesse is a piece of you know what

Jesse the title character in this book and is absolutely despicable. Reed and Gwen are two characters you wanted to get their HEA. Once they talkers everything out all was good for this couple. Great narration that kept me engaged is always good when listening to an audiobook .

Delightful!

This is a lovely story of love, loss, pain and rebirth. Gwen Clark is a wife to Senator Jesse Clark and mother to their daughter, Maddie. When Gwen first met Jesse, his best friend, Reade Walker, caught her attention, too, but Jesse was there to claim her heart. That was seven years ago and Reade has never forgotten her. What he didn't know is that Gwen was just as interested as he was. When Jesse is caught up in a scandal by leaving the country with his intern and Gwen's foundation's money, the only person she can turn to is Reade. This is a truly lovely story that made me smile and swoon at the love that was apparent between these two. As they skirt around the issue, unwilling to be the first to broach the subject, it's Maddie who seals the deal in the best way possible. I really enjoyed this audiobook and the narration was beautifully done by Verla Bond. Her well-modulated, dynamic voice gave each character a unique tone and definite attitude!

Pleasant surprise

I own over 490 audiobooks and most are romance so I’m aways pleasantly surprised when I listen to a storyline that I’ve never listened to before. I felt this book was different, realistic and vivid in a way I could imagine a movie out of it. Also although the story was short it was very well developed and you can feel the connection with the hero and heroine and hope for a happy ending.
Narration: this was my first audiobook by Ms. Bond and I would definitely listen to more books by her. She does distinct voices for each character and adds intensity and passion to the story.
I recommend this book for a quick escape.
