"I love this book. I love this book! One last time for the cheap seats: I love this book! It's like the literary version of Ted Lasso, where you find yourself grinning when you're done, yet never felt the smile develop on your face." (Dolly R. Sickles, All About Romance)
Francine is stunned when she discovers she's been married - for the last 10 years - to Benny, her surly, nerdy frenemy she worked with one summer in Vegas. How in the world did they end up married? Though there was a certain drunken night... She tracks Benny down, sure he'll be as shocked about the marriage as she is, sure he'll be happy to dissolve their union ASAP so she can get the documents she desperately needs.
She's surprised to find that Benny is now a cold, wolfish billionaire. And yes, he'll sign the paperwork - for a price: She has to spend the next three weeks playing his adoring wife.

These two characters, Benny and Francine, have many layers that Ms. Martin slowly and artfully reveals to us in each and every inner monologue as we progress through the story. And it's a bit of a puzzle for the reader to work out as they go along because we never know for sure what's real and what's being seen through the narrow lens of each character's personal perspective. Of the two characters Benny has the most work to do. We all tell ourselves lies to support what we want to believe, and that's what Benny is doing—bending reality to believe the worst of the person who he's fighting so hard not to love anymore. We watch him struggle so hard to convince himself that he doesn't love her.
Benny's a focused cerebral introvert who is socially challenged and doesn't understand extroverts at all. That's why he makes the misjudgments he does. However don't dump on Francine. She's the more social of the two but that doesn't mean she's immature or superficial. She just has a very different personality. She doesn't understand that Benny doesn't know how to do the subtle dance of a budding relationship; he's not adept at body language or flirting; he needs to be hit over the head with a bowling ball, so to speak. But in most ways she "gets him" and cherishes what is unique about him and what he is now hiding. The saddest part of this whole story is all the miscommunication that's taking place and keeping them apart.
So the essence of the story is the relationship struggle progressing through the characters' personal narratives and illustrated through the comedic scenes, the highlight of which is the Swiss Miss dinner. (Don't ask, ya gotta read it.) But once I thought I had read the climax, lo and behold the real climax sneaks in and the story takes a turn toward the dramatic—different and more intense than the other stories in this series. And I was so proud of Francine.
So bottom line, while this story has all of Ms. Martin's wicked humor, don't think it's superficial. You don't have to dig deep to enjoy it, but you can if you want to. There are plenty of layers to dig into. And as always, Ms. Martin's writing skills will expertly navigate you through it.
Bennie and Francine break my heart in the best way
