About this listen

They are the legal world's oddest couple: a shorts-and-sandals beach bum and a Coral Gables blue blood. The only thing keeping them together is that they're on the same side.

Why does an ex-client want to kill Steve Solomon? Who doesn't want to kill a lawyer? Still, a 300-pound marlin stuck in your front door is a weird death threat, even by south Florida standards. How can Steve Solomon explain to his partner why an ex-client wants him dead? When Victoria Lord learns the reason, she's angry enough to murder her law partner, too, or at least break up Solomon & Lord.

But while a psychopathic ex-con comes between the squabbling Miami lawyers, his real target catches them both off guard.

Critic reviews

"This clever, colorful thriller...focuses as much on the age-old conflict between Mars and Venus as on delivering legal wisecracks and page-turning suspense...." ( Publishers Weekly)

Completely Unsympathetic Protagonist

I can’t figure out why Mr. Levine writes about a main character who is supposedly smart enough to get most of his clients off, but too dumb to avoid situations that a child would, and does, see coming. He doesn’t record conversations when it would be prudent, is so self absorbed that he acts like a complete idiot towards his girlfriend, doesn’t call anyone to let them know his whereabouts before entering a dangerous situation and yet in spite of all his shortcomings manages to survive. Come on Mr. Levine, I know it’s fiction, but a dose of reality would be nice when it comes to writing a believable character and if you do know someone like him, heaven help him or her.

Pleasant not compelling read

Not much smarts or deep thinking demonstrated by protagonists. Growing of age story without much focus on the kids.

Awesome

Mr. Levine's book was very interesting to say the least. Enjoyed the reading of this book. It was both exciting and very relaxing, to have someone read to you.

Difficult to decide: 2 or 3 stars

Author Paul Levine seems unable to decide whether to go with "light and fun" or "dark and evil" so he tries to do both in the same novel. It does not work well! The Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord series has promise as light/fun legal thrillers. The characters including Solomon, his law partner and lover Lord, Solomon's precocious 12 year old nephew Billy, Lord's eccentric mother, and Solomon's disgraced judge dad are all likable and well developed. When author Levine goes for light and fun he is successful. William Dufris does an excellent job of narration.

Enjoyable

I did not like this one as much as I liked Soloman vs. Lord, but was still enjoyable & entertaining & credit worthy. Enjoyed hearing of the local places in Key West I have visited. I really like the sense of humor, among the chaos that Levine puts in his books.

Edgy but great story.. More story listening fun.

Good far fetched and edgy story told with wit, honesty and insight by Maestro Levine. A wonderful escape from ordinary told with delicious zest and style. Read it.

Decent Read

Decent read. However, the story drags a little and doesn't get to the good stuff until around chapter 30 or the late 20s. I debated quitting many times, but I don't like to start books and not finish them. Also, the narrator does a terrible job when switching genders. Although, some parts were predictable, it was a decent read overall.

Fun book

I enjoyed this. It would make a good summer beach book. The author allowed his political views to come out too much. but in spite of that, I still liked it. The Solomon character was not politically correct, which for me makes him interesting. He is the polar opposite of the Lord character and that allows for colorful interaction between them. I need to go back and read the earlier books.
