About this listen

Mary DiNunzio gets a terrifying telephone call while she's working late, then goes home to find a shadow lurking at her front door. When a lawyer close to her turns up dead, Mary begins to suspect that the case she's been working on, involving the suicide of an Italian-American in an internment camp during World War II, may not be ancient history after all.©2004 Lisa Scottoline (P)2004 Recorded Books, Inc. and © 2004 HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. Editorial reviews

Spunky, young lawyer Mary DeNunzio becomes passionately entwined in a dusty, old estate settlement involving an Italian-American immigrant who comes to life in Mary's imagination. When an associate is murdered, Mary is convinced it's related to her case and pursues the truth against all odds. Barbara Rosenblat deftly delivers many colorful secondary characters. Her treatment of older people is especially sensitive and credible. She presents the heroine with an almost neutral voice, underplaying Mary's South Philadelphia identity. An interview with the author at the end of the recording provides entertaining insight, especially on the topic of Italian-Americans interned during WWII.

Critic reviews

"Scottoline skillfully weaves a complicated, gripping, and fast-paced tale, at turns comical, nerve-wracking, and enlightening." (Publishers Weekly)

I Love all her books. Amazing. I wish the space between chapters was smaller though.

Loved it

First, I should say I haven't read the book. I should have listened to the sample! The narrator has a dry mouth and moistens it frequently while reading. It's very distracting. I only listed 10 minutes.

Love history, and Scottoline keeps you guessing, as always. What I really love, though, is the humor. She's hilarious.
This book had a bit of language, but not much, compared to some of her other work (you never know what you are going to get with Scottoline).
Some sexual references and crass talk, but not too much (reference to vibrator for instance, and enjoying sex). Violence was about the same as her other work. I appreciate that she doesn't dwell on violence in a sick way, as some other authors do these days!

Fun bit of history thrown in the mix!

The narrator is just too noisy! At some points i am sure she is smoking a cigarette while she is reading. She eats, makes slurping noises and gets “juicy mouth” . Its disgusting! I really wish they would re-record this entire series!

Great book except

This is the first book by Lisa Scottoline that I've listened to and I enjoyed everything about it. Being a suburban Philadelphian, of course, made me smile at all the locales that were familiar.

The story develops as I would imagine all mysteries do with the careful interviewing of anyone who has information. The reader feels each dead end and each moment of discovery.

I've listened to other books narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. The narration didn't disappoint and I was sucked right into the story and the characters.

First Scottoline but definately not my last!

I didn't know either. Scottoline has clearly done her homework when she takes the case described in the book reviews. Most never knew that all the Axis naturalized Americans (many with sons serving in the war for America!) that Italians and Germans were ALSO put into camps (and as a Scottoline character might say, "..and I paid attention in American History. I even got a good grade!". The "Americans" who made that paranoid decision were the same who did so again after Pearl Harbor. The Japanese got the worst of it probably due to politics. The pop-up plot summary does a concise job so no need to repeat it here or. About negative comments on Rosenblat's narration. First, .. so not EVERY single last teensy mouth sound has been edited out. Sheesh. It is only because we are listening carefully through some device that some reviewers make such a fuss! Her reading style so perfectly matches the writer's style that I can't imagine anyone else as the reader. Reading should sound like real talking, well, and.. thinking. Those reviewers make much ado about almost nothing (Yes, there are many other books with perfectly edited out mouth sounds.) But the whiners really exaggerate as you can tell by their level of outrage and their outrageous analogies. Also I don't understand those who want "deadpan" reading. I prefer emotional intensity. Rosenblat is never "over the top" considering the dramatic plot developments and many comic thoughts. Just expect lots of twists and turns and Scottoline's trademark humor. My ONLY complaint (and this IS trite) is that the title is just catchy but hardly relevant to the plot. I'm finding any Scottoline book audio book to be worth the credit for pure entertainment.

The Japanese weren't the ONLY jailed during WWII

Would you listen to Killer Smile again? Why?

No although I love Lisa Scottoline the person reading sounded as though they were chewing gum and smacking.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No had to force myself to finish.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed. storytelling not the storyteller.

Poor reader, good book

The smacking and moist noises she makes ruined the book experience. Always love Lisa's books just wished it was a different narrator.

Ugh the Narrator
