About this listen

An Edgar Award-winning author delivers an explosive thriller about a motorcycle-riding private investigator working a case that risks innocent lives and leaves her no room for error.

An army vet and former bodyguard for the rich and famous, Jessie Mercado has faced all kinds of danger and always emerged victorious. But one thing this motorcycle-riding private investigator has never encountered before is an incarceration consultant.

Preparing wealthy people to go to prison is big business. When Owen Blake of Mamertine Consulting hires Mercado to find his missing partner, her suspect list is filled with recently released white-collar criminals, a few drug kingpins, and a couple of murderers to keep things interesting.

As witnesses turn up dead and car chases leave destruction in their wake, Jessie learns just how far someone will go to keep the fate of one man hidden. But why? To unravel the dark plot, she teams up with Kendra Michaels, a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, and together they hunt down the lethal secrets of Blake’s company, hell-bent on staying one step ahead of disaster.

Superhero extroidenaire

Loved the sarcasm and subtle humor. Narrator was great! Superhero Brice and Jesse are great together. Most memorable and intense moment was when they were attacked at the cabin where Brice was shot. Loved this book!

Some good, some bad, some ugly

I was happy to see Jesse get her own story. However, the title was misleading making it seem like Kendra Michael's would be a bigger part of the story. It was a marketing ploy the was deceptive and unnecessary. Anyone who followed the Kenda Michaels series who have been familiar with Jesse and bought a book advertised as her story. I did enjoy revisiting other past characters like Dee but really missed not seeing Adam Lynch in this book.
The narrator's voice for Kendra was off. Her character sounded different in this book at it was offputting.
Decent plot with some twist and turns but author did not try and hide the villain so you knew who it was almost immediately. The why and the secondary players kept you guessing some though.
Now for the ugly. AGAIN the author painted the heroine, Jesse, as a supposedly strong, intelligent, woman who is yet not strong enough to also enjoy the love of a strong man. The hero is constantly having to kiss her nose and pat her head and pander to her fear of relationships. This is a theme with the Kendra Michaels and and Kaatherine Ling and now the Jesse Mercado series. STOP IT , please . Let these women be like Eve Duncan and her their man.

Love Jessie M

Good story great ending but what I liked the most is; when you have a great plot and characters you don’t have to use constant profanity or filthy sex stuff!!!!

Good Story But Standard Heroine Uber independence a Turn Off

Why do all the strong female characters (except Eve) in the Johansen books have to be so “independent” that they are literally rude bitches to the men who love, respect and support them? They are strong, unique, brilliant and beautiful and yet terrified they will be controlled if they allow a meaningful connection to flourish. It’s a weird lack of self confidence in such powerful characters. Still love the books but they give me angst!

Loved it

It was a fantastic story of Jesse & her friend Brice. There were several scenes at the end with Kendra & some mention of her at the beginning it was full of action every step of the way, nothing was a disappointment. Great narration by Elisabeth Rodgers.
