Publisher's summary

In the heart-pounding sequel to the "zippy, gripping psychological drama" (Kirkus Reviews) Killer Instinct, teen vigilante Lane must face the secrets and unexpected consequences that arise in the wake of her first kill.

It's been three months since Lane made her first kill - the sadistic Decapitator - and now she feels both closer and more alienated than ever from her united, grieving family. Haunted by conflicting memories of her mother, Lane resumes her role as the vigilante Masked Savior out of a feeling of obligation - but her heart just isn't in it anymore. Now that Lane has felt the rush of deeper, darker thrills, a growing part of her wants to revisit its seductive power, and she's not sure how long she can resist.

Meanwhile, the Masked Savior has inspired its own fan site, where groupies gather online to praise, document, and debate each delivered act of justice. But one of Lane's secret admirers is becoming a cunning copycat, exacting "justice" on defenseless innocents, increasing the violence with each attack.

Someone is watching Lane, edging closer to making contact - someone who knows her darkest secrets. Will Lane be able to stop the copycat and keep her identity protected, or will she give in to the thrills that tempt her?

Waiting for the sequel

I'm very pleased with not only the authors work but the audible artist was even better. The author, as you can tell is newer, but is coming into the genre very easily. She does force some of the story and a few of the twist are quite contrived, but it is fun. This isn't on the level of Stephen King or Clive Barker, however, for entertainment it is great. One I listed to the first book in the series, I couldn't wait for the second and I am looking forward to the third.

No true conclusions

This book doesn't really have any ending. It just stops; the story stops. Obviously this is a segue into the next book in the series, but there is no next book published.

Justice or revenge?

Would you listen to Killer Within again? Why?

Probably not. I did enjoy this book as well as the first in the series, Killer Instinct. The plot is well written and I will listen to more from the author and would like to see a third book in this series. Once all is revealed however, there isn't much reason to listen to the book a second time.

What other book might you compare Killer Within to and why?

I really don't like comparing one book to another, as it puts certain expectations on the reader. This storyline differs from the first book quite a bit. While it continues to be about the same characters, the killer was revealed in Killer Instince and only provides the influence for the characters decisions in this book.

Which scene was your favorite?

I don't really have a favorite scene from this particular book. My favorite part would be the multiple characters to choose from as the copy cat.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't laugh or cry during this book. I did feel anger toward the grandfather and the way he treated his grandson at one point.

Any additional comments?

A good book that is well written and performed. It was worth the listen with it's plot twists and multiple characters to keep you guessing. Considered a YA book, but I think is good for anyone that enjoys a mystery.

Not different enough from book 1

Mild spoilers with no names given.
Good enough as a free listen. It felt like the author tacked on characters just to keep the same plot going. For example, there’s no mention of it in book 1, but in this book we discover there was an additional member working with the serial killer from that first book. Because we all know serial killers work in mass groups, right?

There’s also retreads of plots. Just like in book 1, Lane develops a friendship of sorts with a guy, but her trust issues cause rifts between them. Just like in book 1, there’s a mysterious someone who’s following her and knows Lane’s secrets. Just like in book 1, there are family secrets. Just like in book 1, a villain is revealed, wants Lane to join up, and is easily dispatched.

There are some new threads, like the vigilante mindset going viral and spawning copycats. But, it all got to be more and more unbelievable: killers coming out of the woodwork. The narration, especially for Lane’s internal monologue became quite hyperbolic. And, while some villains were obvious, other whodunnits made little sense unless you believed their tacked-on story arcs.

Lane’s story continues in two more books. You can gets those two books in a boxed set called
Killers Among, but I wouldn’t recommend that unless the set is offered on sale.

Another round of Lane

Entertaining, though like many sequels, it doesn't compare to the first novel, less believeable, but still interesting and fun to hear more from Slim Justice.

Third Expected?

The first one was better. I was quite invested and enjoyed listening for the most part, but the denouement was a little shaky for me.
