Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The #1 bestselling author of The Island is back with another pulse-pounding, twisty listen!

Haunted by the past . . . terrified of the present.

Penny knows she must forget about her ex, Nash. Ever since his father was revealed as the brutal serial killer who traumatized their small town last Halloween, Penny’s parents have forbidden her to have anything to do with Nash or his family. It’s hard not to think of him—but she’s trying.

That stops when she goes shopping with friends for a costume. What she finds instead is ripped from a horror movie: someone from school bleeding out on the floor of a dressing room. Stabbed.

People are quick to blame Nash and his sister, Grace, but as Halloween nears and the body count rises, Penny can’t help thinking this copycat killer is someone no one else suspects. . . .

storyline and title

I thought the storyline kept me very engaged. the title definitely made me think it was going to be paranormal of some sort. I kinda thought it was gonna be this whole dream or memory Of the main girl (forgot her name 🙃) and she was the ultimate killer but it definitely didn't turn out the way.

Not about a haunting at all

The name of this story is rather odd considering there was no paranormal activity of any kind. The plot was so-so and it was pretty easy to guess who was the killer early on. Especially if you read true crime often. I found the narrator to be a frustrating, selfish teen so it was hard for me to get into the book because her reaction to every incident was annoying. The ending … I mean it’s a cliff hanger but also an odd way to end it. Overall, Not a book I’d recommend.

The Haunting?

I’m not quite sure why the title was named that. Do t get me wrong I liked the story line and it keep me engaged but the title should have been something else. The narrator at times game me anxiety though because she sounded panicked in spots. If you don’t want a spoiler then stop here……………

SPOILER ALERT
It didn’t surprise me how it ended. I figured there was something wrong with Grace and the story alluded to a second person because Scream was a slight focal point in it. I figured it was a brother sister thing. So the double killer thing didn’t surprise me but the person helping Grace did.

Not how I thought it would end

It’s a great read, lots of turns I didn’t see coming and definitely didn’t think it would end the way it did.

It was okay

I had a hard time liking this one. I was entertained enough and it was suspenseful. It felt like a Scream movie. The name of the book makes no sense. There’s no mention of haunting anything in this book.

As for characters, teenage girls are hard to like in any book for me but this one was a bit much. Constantly putting herself in danger, whiny about her parents literally trying to keep her safe. The way she talked to Nash gave clingy teenager vibes. But that’s what to expect about high school characters.

I did not expect the twist of who the killer was. I kind of suspected at one point but they weren’t my top guesses.

The ending is a cliffhanger with no plans for a sequel so that is annoying as hell. I have no closure or hopes of one. Overall I would not personally recommend this book. But if you don’t mind crappy endings and like Scream go for it.

Reminds me of Scream

I thought this was so good. It reminds me a lot of the scream franchise which I enjoy. I can’t decide if I love or hate the cliffhanger knowing there’s no second book.
