About this listen

How a Nineteenth Century Georgia Farm Boy Because a Manhattan based National Authority on Alcohol and Drug Treatment.

Charles B. Towns founded a hospital named after him in 1909 facing Central Park in New York City. His hospital specialized the medical treatment of alcohol and drug addiction using a methodology that was thought of as state of the art in those times. It catered to the rich and famous and featured privacy and confidentiality. In the hospital's 25th year Bill Wilson was to experience a "white light experience," which changed his life and led him to be a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Without Towns Hospital and its 1930s medical director Dr. William Silkworth, it is highly likely that Bill Wilson would have simply remained one of the thousand of nameless drunks that frequented Bellevue Hospital.
