About this listen

It’s January of 1704, and Matthew Corbett continues his mission to Italy, accompanied by Hudson Greathouse and former enemy Professor Fell. They seek Brazio Valeriani and information about the mirror created by his father, the sorcerer Ciro. Legend claims the mirror can be used to summon demons from beyond.

But fate has other plans for Matthew as their ship is disabled by a pod of whales, and they seek refuge on a secluded island. The islanders welcome them with a massive feast, but all is not what it seems. As the island pulls them deeper into its influence, the castaways struggle to maintain their grip on reality, even their very identity. Matthew must keep his wits about him and solve the mystery enshrouding the other side of the island, where an active volcano looms and a secretive creature lurks.

The King of Shadows is the eighth installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon’s acclaimed series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, a brave “problem-solver” who now faces a challenging foe that threatens to take over his most valuable resource: his own mind.

Excellent as usual. A long historical mystery starting the famous Matthew Corbet. But..the author chose this book to dig a little deeper into some of the characters. Stick with it though because it all comes together nicely. Great narration. I wish the next one came out tomorrow!!

Excellent!! As usual!…but…

Great story from McCammon - and nicely continues the Matthew Corbett saga. I also loved the origin stories of various characters in flashback - great to see some detail on characters otherwise seen as villains but lacking the why/how they got to that place. Looking forward to the next one!

I expect the story to drop off with every new entry. Surely McCammom can’t keep my interest going for yet another entry! But goodness! They get better and better. Each book is better than the previous. And man did they nail it by getting Edoardao Ballerini to read all of these. He’s phenomenal.

Better with every book

I'm too far invested in the series to stop listening now, but this book did contain probably some of the more disturbing material that I've come across yet. It seems like each book the author keeps digging a little deeper into depths of depravity that can be found in the human nature.
I still enjoyed the uniqueness of the ideas and events within his story though and I appreciate his writing. while it doesn't measure up to the first book in the series which is my favorite still, I will be waiting for the release of the next in this series.

ready for the next one!

I like that there was backstory to the villains in this novel, but the story itself was just a bit off for me. However it's still worth listening to, especially thanks to the fantastic narration.

Not his best, but I still love it.

I was thrilled to receive my latest novel in the Matthew Corbett series. And now I shall have to wait for the next, as I simply could not stop listening at every opportunity.
Despite some of the more harrowing tales, the humour of Robert McCammon shines through in the story, enough to keep me chuckling away. Masterfully narrated by Edoardo Ballerini! His voice and depiction of each character was so convincing.
To Robert McCammon, please don’t keep us waiting too long for the next adventure of Matthew Corbett.
