About this listen

Mr. Barrett Sterne has one thing on his mind. He must find Lord Tensford’s fossil specimen—the one that was stolen right out from under his nose—and his cracked skull. It is a matter of honor. It is vital to preserving the regard of his close-knit circle of friends. Why, then, must he keep pushing away thoughts of Miss Munroe, the girl who distracted him from his duty that fateful night?

Miss Penelope Munroe has many things on her mind—her scientific interests, the help she’s providing her village friends, and the fact that her parents are pushing her toward marriage. Her father wants her to marry a peer, her mother keeps thrusting her at her scientist friends, but she cannot help but wonder if that spark between her and Mr. Sterne was real?

She has a chance to find out when she becomes embroiled in the search for the missing fossil. Sparks are indeed flying and passions swirl, but Sterne’s demons have their claws buried deep in his heart. He is continually drawn to her, but feels honor bound to stay away. Penelope’s love and determination are fierce, but can she free him enough to trust in the permanence of love?

A scientific pair and a stimulating mystery

A scientific pair and a stimulating mystery

5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration

This is the third book in the “Series of Unconventional Courtships” series, and it is the best so far.  The pacing had been a little too slow in #2, but this book was consistently entertaining and kept my attention. Whereas book #2 was moderately steamy, this book is low steam.  It just has kissing, a little making out, and a good bit of chemistry.  Since this novel has a mystery to solve that refers back to what happened in book #2 and a little from #1, I recommend that the series be read in order.

I love the main characters, who both have a deep interest in the natural and social sciences.  Mr. Barrett Sterne is the friend of Lord Tensford and Keswick, the heroes from the previous books.  Mr. Sterne is busy researching and writing scientific articles and didn’t think he could afford the distraction of a beautiful lady, even if she was just as intelligent as he was.  Miss Munroe had briefly first met Mr. Sterne in the previous book, but she insists on now helping him to solve the mystery of who stole Tensford’s prized fish fossil.  Her mother is a prestigious botanist with an interesting personality.  Miss Munroe longs to find a husband who will treat her as an equal, and Mr. Sterne might be just right.

I love the unconventional courtship of Miss Munroe and Mr. Sterne that occurs during the crime investigation.  I love their respect for each other’s minds and how they loved discussing intellectually stimulating topics.  Miss Munroe had to do some pursuing of the man, which is par for the course in this series.  I thought that the mystery aspect was well written and exciting.  I recommend this series to fans of Regency romance.

The narrator has a lovely tone of voice and a great grasp of upper class English accents.  She is very good at male and female voices and makes each one distinctive.  Her pacing was excellent in this book, and she gave an excellent performance, which was better than in book #2 in the series.

I requested and received a free audiobook copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
