About this listen

They had the perfect plan to start a new life together...before it all went horribly wrong.

A new twisting novel of psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of The Girl I Used to Be.

Coworkers Ruby and Harry are in love - but they're married to other people. They decide to tell their spouses that their marriages are over and to start a new life together. Ruby has wanted to leave her controlling husband for a while, so she tells him she's leaving and waits at the hotel where she and Harry are to meet. But Harry never shows up.

Suddenly, Ruby has lost everything. Harry won't answer her calls, and she's fired from her job. She finds a cheap apartment in a run-down part of town, all the while wondering what happened to Harry.

Just as Ruby thinks she's hit rock bottom, strange and menacing things start to happen - someone is sneaking into her apartment, and someone is following her home late at night - and she is going to have to fight for her survival.

I liked this book. Didn't know what to expect but it did make me say 'uh oh' a few times which is a good thing. The narrators were great and they did a wonderful job individualizing the characters. I recommend this book. It's not a thriller but it does have an unexpected ending.

Unexpected Ending

I enjoyed every word, every twist, every turn! The end was so richious!! Soooo good!! I listened to the entire book in only 2 sittings because I couldn't handle not knowing what was going to come next.

Wow!!!

I love the genre...it’s comforting in a way to read about people with bigger problems than your own sometimes!!! This one fits the bill perfectly. I haven’t finished yet so I can’t comment on the full extent of the story but so far I am fully engaged. The only problem is the narrator for the voice of Emma. It is excruciating! I find myself disappointed when the chapter is Emma. I love her perspective on the story but her narration is sooooo dramatic and she emphasizes way too many words. When she is in conversation with dialogue it’s wonderful...it’s the back story that is just terrible.
On the other hand the voice of Ruby, I could listen to forever! She’s terrific. I would suggest trying a sample first to make sure you can deal with Emma’s narration. I will definitely finish but still cringe a bit through Emma’s chapters.

Love the Story...and one narrator

It was a good book and didn't really ever lose me at any point but I really did not care for Emma's voice it was pretty hard to listen to.

good book. didn't care for Emma's voice.

I agree that the Ruby narrator was really good -Emma was okay but detracted from the character. Story was great.

Great story!

I almost didn’t read this book because of the narrator reviews for Emma’s character. It was not bad at all. I felt like she actually fit well with who I imagined Emma to be; a little more serious, confident, and educated. There wasn’t much emotion portrayed by the narrator, but I don’t think Emma was an overly emotional character either.
The book was well written. Normally when I read a book like this, I initially root for the protagonist. However, with this book I found myself wanting more of each character so I could decide who’s side I was actually on. In the end, I didn’t really pick a side which was a nice change of pace.
Without giving anything away, the end was satisfactory and I was happy for those who fared well. However, I did find myself wishing for an epilogue with a twist. Overall a great read. I’ll definitely read this author again.

The narrators were not bad

Excellent all around story- great plot and wonderful narration - the twists and turns make an intriguing tale.

Captivating

I had been on a downward spiral with my audiobook choices and, unfortunately, this one was no different. Author Mary Torjussen pens an unusual and sometimes unbelievably over-the-top tale. I’ve listened to Elizabeth Knowelden before and found her breathy voice somewhat annoying. I thought I’d give her one more chance. Yep! She’s still annoying. She almost whispers throughout. I bought this one because it was an Audible 2-for-1 sale. The plot starts out well enough, then takes an abrupt turn that becomes so far-fetched, I found it quite silly. I struggled to listen throughout, but had quite a few eye-rolling moments.

Not the best narration, story improbable

Lots of undercurrants that don't become obvious until toward the end. I will enjoy this one again sometime.
