Great story - bad read by AI

Amazing first person retelling of their time in country. You can almost imagine being in his skin. Unfortunately the virtual voice was a horrible choice. It took away from the overall experience.

Liked story but not narrative

Something not right with AI narrative. Often the story was broken in with an added edited word or sentence. This was very noticeable and distracting.

Great history

The virtual voice narration was impersonal and often mispronounced words and abbreviations but don’t let that stop you from listening to this great book.

excellent, no frills description of actual military events

I liked everything about the actual book, well-written, clean prose, very detailed, incredibly engage and propulsive.

I dislike the virtual voice narration because it is incapable of many basic speaking skills. It struggled with the numerical names of military groups, made weird pauses after every period -- even the ones in military titles like Lt. There were other smaller issues as well, but they didn't affect the comprehension of the content nearly as much.

A must read-listen for 11B

This is a realistic and gripping retelling of the Vietnam war from the Ground Pounders. Every Soldier must read and understand what it means to be in combat. The computer generated reading of this book is very good overall but there are some glitches, like pauses after a period when reading a tank and name of a person.

This is an excellent book

Dont be put off by the clumsy title and "virtual voice" narration, if you are interested in lrrps or the Vietnam war in general, you'll love this book. Honestly the artificial voice acting is pretty impressive, outside of a few brief moments it sounds perfectly fine

AI Narrator

The story is a familiar one, and I enjoy hearing the background and exploits of the Vietnam War and the brave soldiers who actively participated in the fight. That said, the AI narrator is a sad example of failure to provide the story the respect it deserves with a human reading it. Mispronunciations, inaccurate sentence translation (stopping as if a complete sentence after an abbreviation, i.e. “Col. Smith”), mixing military abbreviations and literal spellings (145th Arty pronounced as one four five tee aytch arty) etc, etc were obvious and repeated throughout the book. My suggestion would be to find a few VFW lodges and get some narrators who would very likely do it for free.

the use of voice AI is not how such an important story should be told..

dislike the use of AI voice mispronouncing words..and SOG stood for studies and observation group not special operations group.. not having properly titles and names is disrespectful to the men that experienced this war,

Clearly describes life in an LRRP unit

I felt that this book gave a "good" description of life in an LRRP unit. Not great but nothing annoying about it, either.
I think that was due to the writing being a bit bland, not the story, per se.

Yes, it's narrated by Virtual Voice, but I was surprised how good VV was. I was very surprised how human and realistic it sounds. Again, it's not great and doesn't know when to give emotion or intonation, but it's not bad either. I can think of *certain human narrators* would I would love to see replaced by Virtual Voice. VV doesn't make the faux pas that you would expect (e.g. knowing which of the various ways to pronounce the word 'read') but you could tell when edits had been spliced in, so maybe they were corrections of such instances. Which is odd... why can we tell when they splice in a fix? Talking of odd things and realism, you can even hear when Virtual Voice turns the page! Hey... think about that...

So anyway, if you'd like to learn more about the LRRPs in Vietnam, this is definitely worth your time.
