About this listen

A Green Beret's gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls "an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity", undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos.

But they didn't infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards - oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerrilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese.

Together, this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor - but at a terrible cost.

A must read for anyone interested in SF Ops.

Straightforward and unapologetic. Amazing story of the involvement of SF operators in the Vietnam war. An extremely well written book.

Hilarious. Entertaining.

Best ‘nam book I’ve read. Hilarious the entire time but still had all aspects of war and SOG front and center. Can’t wait until the next one!

Magnificent

This book is bar none the best war memoir I have ever read. As a combat veteran grunt I could relate to so much of what he was saying. Hilariously told in the manner of a true warrior poet. A must read.

Awesome Book!

I enjoy first hand accounts of special forces soldiers. This book was no exception. I liked how the author talks about missions, as well as the shenanigans that occur on base. The book is well written with subtle humor throughout. This book will have you laughing, even in the serious parts.

Wonderfully written and wonderfully narrated

Nick approaches this book with a truly funny sarcastic humor making fun of the military at a difficult time in our nation's history. A really enjoyable story. on to Whispers in the Tall Grass

Think of TV's MASH from the SOG perspective

Not a veteran and horrified by this book (as I should have been). It was not unexpected because consistent exposure to the worst elements of war (e.g. mutilation of human beings, animals, and the environment; exposure to gun fire, bombings, whatever kills; and the constant stress of being placed in life and death situations) has to manifest itself in bizarre behavior eventually. Was it funny? Not to me. What I envision is a future for these combat veterans that is riddled with PTSD and am horrified. The narration by George Spelvin was spot on and totally projected some super badass soldier's attitude. I hope the writing by Nick Brokhausen was cathartic. He did a good job. The "humor" allowed me to listen to the entire book even tho' it was anything but.

Amazing, hilarious, and insightful!

Best Vietnam War book I have ever read and have listened to it at least half a dozen times! The missions are insane, the author is hilarious and the stories should be told. Best part is its not one of those books trying to prove how cool the warrior is
