About this listen

A Green Beret's gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls "an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity", undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos.

But they didn't infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards - oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerrilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese.

Together, this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor - but at a terrible cost.

Very good story telling

Very Hunter S. Thompson style of story telling. Humor mixed with the extreme make this book very entertaining.

Excellent

The story is excellent. Even though it is from the SOG perspective, it provides broad insight into the Vietnam War experience. It was very entertaining, there was some humour, some seriousness, some factual presentations, and some parts that tug at your heart.

The reader is also excellent.

I normally listen to audio books while driving, but this is one audio book that I made time to listen to.

One of the Best Books Ever!

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read about Vietnam! You never know what is going to happen and whether you will be laughing or almost crying over what those guys went through. Great Read and highly recommended.

Immersive, Hilarious and Dark.

It was excellent to listen to. One moment you're laughing, the next you're hanging on to every word of a dangerous insertion and then the darkness of Nick's experience appear.

Excellent book!

This is one of my favorite first hand accounts I’ve read. It was really funny, great descriptions, and a sort of perfect logic to it. I laughed out loud more times than I can count. But it also has just an outstanding serious side to it. There are not a tremendous amount of SOG books out there. This goes into some amazing accounts of the operational tempo, methodology, and tactics. I’ve read hundreds of books on special operations and the Vietnam war. This ranks at the top. Nick is a warrior and an outstanding author! Well done.

I couldn’t stop listening!

Nick is a fantastic author/storyteller! His addition of good humor and detailed descriptions of his experiences, made me feel like I was right there with him. I felt an immense sense of pride and patriotism listening to his account of the vietnam war. Thanks for sharing and God bless the men and woman of our armed forces.

A glimpse into war only seen by a few....

......delivered with entertaining irreverence the makes the absurd plausible and the reality absurd. Left me hungry for more.

A must have for every war enthusiast

The best war account I have ever read. Hands down the smartest, sarcastic, SOG, I have ever had the please of reading. It tells the story of one deployment in suck detail in the accounts of the fighting but more importantly the mental state one has to shift into while being in this kind of environment. A true look into the mind of what it took to survive such a hellacious deployment. An honor to read.

Thank you for your story.

A different SOG book by a dangerously smart guy

If you’ve ever met someone with charisma and razor sharp wit who always has everyone laughing this author would be that guy if you added him being a SOG bada$$. He’s the guy smart enough to pretend to be less awesome than he is, but has “too crazy to not be true” stories. Lots of great new stories or retellings in a great way from different perspective if you’ve already read every other SOG book. He is crass, but RT Habu and Covey were laying absolute waste to the S. Vietnam invaders every mission so you should be able to stomach some misbehavior to keep them sane in between the near lethal doses of danger they repeatedly took. However, it’s not the book for a car trip with young kids.
Narrator does a flipping fantastic job compared to (all?) other military book narrators. Only gripe is he says “cove-E” instead of “Cuv-E” like I’ve heard it in all the other audio books. Otherwise the constant torture of mispronounced words in a military audio book is marked absent.
Highly recommend, it brings something different than most Vietnam or SOF/SOG books. Definitely worth buying. The end brought goosebumps to my arms and I laughed out loud almost every day on the way to work listening to this. Good job, Brokenfish or whatever your name is.
