About this listen

From the 2018 RITA Award-winning author!

Earl. War hero. Notorious rake. After the Battle of Waterloo, Eli Dawes was presumed dead - and would have happily stayed that way. He's no longer the reckless young man he once was and only half as pretty. All he wants is to hide away in his country home, where no one can see his scars. But when he tries to sneak into his old bedroom in the middle of the night, he's shocked to find someone already there.

Rose Hayward remembers Eli as the arrogant lord who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into her art studio doesn't correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and she can't help but be drawn to him. He might be back from the dead, but it's Rose who is suddenly feeling very, very much alive.

As hoped…

This is a credit-worthy historical romance. Engaging characters and story, well written. Enjoyable narration.

Delightful

This is my favorite Kelly Bowen series. I love the messages of self-empowerment
Brilliantly written narration was perfection as all Ashford’s narrations

Better than the Ist. Not as good as 3rd

This 2nd book of the series was better than the first book, but not as good as the third. That said, I did like how the book dealt with deformities and less than perfect people as many of the HR novels portray.

Beauty and the Beast w/ Some 2nd Chance Romance!

A physically scarred hero and an emotionally/socially scarred (but badass) heroine? That's what I call a match made in heaven and exactly what we get in Eli and Rose! I LOVED how it is established very early on that Eli sees Rose as the one that got away, so we get a bit of second chance romance here too. Add to that a touch of enemies to lovers and Last Night with the Earl made me a happy camper. This one was a bit more emotionally taut than A Devil in the Night and that made the payoff to HEA that much more sweeter. It amazed me how Kelly Bowen portrayed Rose's issue in such a way that seemed historically accurate, yet so easily translated to current times. I also really enjoyed the connections to the previous book and the hints to the escalating drama that we might see in the next...

Really enjoyed this book

I’m a firm believer that what’s on the inside is the most important and I love how this book portrays this.

Okay Story and Narration

This was a good historical romance story, It wasn't to sappy, cheesy and full of angst. So, right there is a bonus. I really liked Rose a lot for most of the book she started out smart, strong and spunky. Eli Dawes seemed so mad most of the time. I don't know if that was the author's intention or the narrators translation.

The story line and plot was good. Not a whole lot of surprises or a mystery going on but still good. The chemistry between Rose and Eli was good, they made a good match. There was a nicely written sex scene. Not rated G not erotica. There was also a lot of dialogue throughout the entire book, which was great.

As for the narration, I am a fan of Ashford McNab, I always like her narrations. She does a really good job. However, in this book she really did a job on Eli's voice making him sound mad all the time. Other than that, the narration was good.

I am a fan of Kelly Bowen and my favorite book of hers is Duke of My Heart. That was one of my favorite stories and characters. If you haven't listened to it I highly recommend it.
