About this listen

Bernie Raleigh is a failure at nearly everything he touches. Nobody notices a loser, and after being kidnapped for ransom as a child, Bernie has spent his adult life trying to avoid being noticed.

That's impossible now that he's inherited his grandfather's enormous fortune. The inheritance comes complete with a mansion, a lot of obligations, and a very problematic housekeeper named Meda Amos.

Beauty queen, alien abductee, crypto-Jew, single mother—Meda is all those things, and she may be the only person who can help Bernie survive his new and very public life.

I was counting down the days for this to hit Audible because I love everything I've read by Bryn Greenwood but the narration made this impossible to get into. The narrators were emotionless and just boring. I listened for an hour hoping it would get better but gave up and returned it. I'm sure the story is exceptional so I'll be buying the hard copy, the narration on this one was just awful.

Horrible narration

I agree with other listener he didn’t take the ending to the finish line! Other books by this author was great

That’s it ! No real ending

I have loved two other books by this author but I was disappointed by this one. The narration was not great. The dialogue was frustrating and the ending was as though the author got close to the finish line and just wandered off. It’s not as though I couldn’t see where the line was going, you still need to cross it to say you’re finished.

Did the author forget to finish?

The ending stops abruptly with no closure at all. It’s like the author just quit or something. HUH?

Not my favorite Bryn Greenwood book but definitely a good read, interesting story line. The ending seemed drawn out a bit.

Good read, not great

This author CAN WRITE. This is the third book of hers I’ve read. It’s not my favorite of the three, but like always the characters are very relatable. You really have to read between the lines and think deep in the dialogue. It’s not spelled out for the reader. Dealing with my own mental health struggles, I could relate to the main character & enjoyed his thoughts & sarcasm. The male narrator was fine, but the female narrator could be annoying, just my personal preference. People complain about how the book ended, & I honestly found the sudden ending refreshing. I was ready for it to be over by then, there was definite closure, & I feel the book was more about the healing journey of unprocessed trauma of each character & figuring out how to live again.

Interesting…but good

I first read "The ugly and wonderful things" by this author. I read it four times in a row it was so good! This book was just as good as the first one. The Will was just as good. Ms. Bryan is an author that gives depth to her characters in way so many others failed. I cannot scream loudly enough about how exhausted I am with reading a good book while being forced to the phrases such as "her beautiful toned alabaster/porcelain skin (I'm black) ,long silky, shining, wavy hair that smells of morning dew, etc. I could start projectile vomiting!! I don't see these male Denzel Washington's in my day to day encounters. My so wonderful Ms. Bryan descriptions of her characters have the human flaws the flaws we all have this makes her books not only more interesting but able to connect with more. Stretch marks and skin fat above and below the bra line are something beautiful to the main male character while he looks at the woman he loves, that's writing. Her plots cannot be foreshadowed and the characters are deeply fleshed out, not the scenery! I now will go on to read her next book in one day. She keeps me enthralled in a world of chaos and madness. I can get away. I only need more happy endings to her books before I wake back up to my real world. Ms. Brynn is a must read author!

EXCEPTIONAL AUTHOR AND BOOK

I had high hopes that I would enjoy this book as I have enjoyed two others by the author which led me to find this book. The narrators were very monotone. The story honestly just ends in the middle of thought as if the author forgot about the ending. Bryn Greenwood’s books, “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things,” and “The Reckless Oath We Made” are SO good but this book, by comparison, is hard to recommend.

Should have heeded the advice of other reviewers

I want more answers as I am taken my the characters. This says so much about the writing that you feel a part of their life and want to know more… a great read

Very well written and held you to the end
