About this listen

The chase is on in New York Times best-selling author Rita Mae Brown's gripping new foxhunting mystery, featuring the irrepressible "Sister" Jane Arnold and the wily antics of her four-legged friends. In Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, a century-old crime reawakens bad will - and stirs up a scandal that chills Sister to the bone. Sister Jane and the Jefferson Hunt Club have traveled from Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains to the Bluegrass State of Kentucky to ride with the members of the Woodford Hounds - in the teeth of foul weather. Sister knows better than anyone that an ill wind blows no good. After the hunt, Sister Jane and her boyfriend, Gray Lorillard, head to a sumptuous party on a nearby estate, also home to a historic equine graveyard. The revelry is interrupted by jarring news: The discovery of grisly remains in the cemetery that are decidedly not equine. Now Sister and her hounds are on the case, digging up clues to an old murder that links three well-connected Southern families. When mayhem follows the Jefferson Hunt back to Virginia, the deadly doings become all too real: A dear friend of Sister's is found murdered. Sister and her animal friends must work fast to find a clever killer determined to keep deep-rooted secrets buried. A rollicking, riveting mystery, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie is a masterly audiobook full of colorful characters, gorgeous country landscapes, and the breathtaking thrill of the hunt.

Rita Mae does it again and again. I don’t read anything else. Especially in the changing seasons.

Wonderful atmosphere

Thanks Ms Brown for intriguing story with superb insight into animal personalities. One question How can Clytemnestra be a heifer when she has her calf Orestes? Ag 101 said a heifer was an unbred young cow

NARRATOR WAS UNBEARABLE,!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I love her knowledge and ability to explain and educate about Hunting and Horses...her knowledge of 'Gossip' and old stories, is fun. I am a horse anything sponge so entertain and educate me a bit on anything horse and I'm good...BUT....

I did not know who the narrator was when I started listening...it took about 3 minutes to figure out it had to be the author...worst narration I have ever heard... RITA, Please give us all a break; put up your Ego, sniff the wind like the hounds and pick up the right scent! The pack is not following you... Will not be putting myself thru another ear assault...EMBARESSING.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

THE NARRATOR

How did the narrator detract from the book?

TOTALLY

Do you think Let Sleeping Dogs Lie needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not w same narrator...better writing plotting editing...was sort of a phone it in & sloppy everything...

Any additional comments?

Too many questions...not really into solving the writers glitches.

It's nice to hear from old friends again

Any additional comments?

I adore everything that Rita Mae Brown writes. This is the first of her novels that I have purchased in audio form. I must say that I will not do so again. Although I think Rita Mae is a fantastic author, she is not a good narrator.

I had difficulty with her odd pauses in mid-sentence and difficulty determining who was speaking at the moment as her inflection didn't change much.

I finally just thought I'd pretend that instead of a professional narrator, a friend was sitting in a chair next to me and reading the story. That helped a lot.

Rita Mae's novels are a wonderful mix of adventure, love and friendship, along with strong but subtle commentary on issues.

Love them.

too condescending to reader

What would have made Let Sleeping Dogs Lie better?

Not having RM Brown narrate

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was not a surprise

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was just a terrible narrator

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Familiar characters because I have read/listened to RM Brown's books

getting tired of the increasingly ideological tone

I used to enjoy Brown but the conservative ideology is becoming clumsy and intrusive.

Just awful

What would have made Let Sleeping Dogs Lie better?

Never again will I purchase an Audiobook by Rita Mae Brown. The author narrates the book herself. Her voice has become so horse and raspy I can barley stand to listen. Plus if she tries to add any emotion her voice cracks.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The fox hunting descriptions.

How could the performance have been better?

Someone else should have narrated the book. I am quite sure anyone else would have been better.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Let Sleeping Dogs Lie?

The performance by the author was so bad it was hard to remember anything.

Any additional comments?

I was looking for a good book about fox hunting with an accurate portrayal of the people who ride. This wasn't it.
