About this listen

A helping hand, a fateful cost. In this ominous short story from New York Times bestselling author Owen King, the cost of living keeps rising—and it collects payment from the soul.

Sensing his mother’s failing health, a struggling teenager pours out his worries in a letter and drops it through the mail slot of an abandoned show house. He’s surprised when a response arrives, promising good fortune for the price of just one name: someone he hates. He’d give anything for his mother. But the true cost may be more than he’s willing to pay.

Owen King’s Letter Slot is part of The Shivers, a collection of haunting stories that reveal the otherworldly terrors all around us. Once you know, there’s no going back. Read or listen to each story in one unsettling sitting.

WISHES

This one didn't thrill me as well. It started out good. A young man and his sickly mother weather money troubles. He finds an unusual solution that brings them good fortune. He has his doubts along the way. The twist at the end wasn't as clear as it should've been and didn't make much sense. Narration on the audiobook was rather rote and dull.

Great short story, good characters and a dash of darkness that puts an exclamation point on the fun

Owen, you are a King

That's all. I just appreciate the way Owen built the characters. It's a pleasure to purchase the work of a true "like minded" writer, compared to my truly amazing favorite, Mr. Stephen King, Owen's Father of whom I adore. Read a few more of Owen's works & the man can build a lovely story.

The wonderful characters impressed me

Another awesome story from Owen King! Creepy story about a kid offered a chance to help his mom. For a small price… Narrator Grover Gardner was amazing. He also narrated The Stand by SK and just like that book, he really made listening to Letter Slot that much better!

How much do you REALLY want your wish to come true?

A bit perplexed as to why this short story is considered a horror story. Not a bad story but no shivers experienced. Reader was monotone and didn’t help to draw you into the story.

No Shivers

The author’s voice sounded like an older adult trying to sound like a teen. The voice actor sounds like an older man. Overall it was like a 70-something wanted to write a story set in 2025 from the perspective of a teen, but made that happen by mentioning charging cellphones a bunch and giving the main character a lesbian friend. Even she spoke really weird, like an older adult trying to sound like a kid.

Weird voice actor choice for a teen boy

Just like his father, he can't keep politics out of his story. I didn't finish listening.
