About this listen

For a family trying to make an isolated farmhouse into a home, fear and rage are getting harder to control in a primal short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Whisper Network and Cutting Teeth.

The Strauss family is on knife’s edge. Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad. Rachel feels the restlessness in her blood returning. Their children are getting out of hand. And a recent mudslide has forced the wolves out of the woods to look for food. As dusk falls and tensions rise, the family must come together to survive the night—from the threats outside and those within.

Chandler Baker’s Big Bad is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind. They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting.

I really liked the story and narration of this relatively quick listen. Good tension & suspense. I have not read this author before but will look for her other books.

Great horror short

This is my favorite of the series. Narration was great. Story was engaging and well paced.

Best of the series

Parts with the kids were annoying at times and the unnatural way Sam handled Hank at first is why I knocked off a star.

Good story

It's Slower paced at first, but starts moving faster and faster toward a gripping final act.

Great short story full of dread

This was a good story, scary in all the best ways. But there are a few details I didn't really understand. I think it switches time periods once or twice but I'm really not even sure. Even with the confusion, though, it was a really good story.

Scary but a little confusing!

This story was really good and kept me guessing the whole time. I am a little confused about a few things, but it was still good

I like how, through this whole series, there is a subtle undertone that gives a nod to some of the realities in today's world/society that should terrify us all far more than the Creature Feature stories themselves. All without ever using this as a platform for political discourse the way Stephen King did in Holly.
"There are always truths submerged within stories, and her job is, if not to dredge them up, then to invite readers onto her own chartered boat, guiding them so that they may uncover those truths from the murky waters for themselves."
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay
“Fiction is the truth inside the lie.”
– Stephen King
Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
That’s what fiction is for. It’s for getting at the truth when the truth isn’t sufficient for the truth.”
― Tim O’Brien
“Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth.”
― Albert Camus

"The men around the table take a long time getting to their feet. They’re old, some born that way, some having grown into it properly. Rachel imagines moths chewing up their crotches."
Big Bad by Chandler Baker

"When your body is in crisis, time slows. Sam remembers hearing once that this phenomenon actually occurs because the brain takes more snapshots during a crisis, clicking like a camera, gathering information, anything that might be useful, anything to save itself."
Big Bad by Chandler Baker

"she knows that love can be just as terrifying as fear."

howlingly good

This was a pretty good story. The Audio was good and the book was paced appropriately for a short-story. I felt the dialog was a bit clunky in parts, but overall I enjoyed it. I think this would have been better if it was longer and had more time to explore some of the characters and build up their personalities.

Big Bad - Too Short

I really wasn’t sure how it would end. Left me feeling a little bummed rather than creeped out or scared. Narration was good.

Interesting spin on werewolves
