Publisher's summary
What happens when the reality you face doesn't align with the narratives of "truth" you've trusted up to this point? What if the destination you thought you were headed toward is not manifesting the way you hoped? Is it possible to change course without disrupting the life you have built? Maybe the life you've built isn't what you feel calling you, but it's the life you know and makes you feel safe. Light Through a Rusty Roof is a captivating novel about life's wonderfully complex journey. Follow along as one man must wrestle with his identity as he experiences doubt, struggle, and growth. Can love conquer fear when it requires a leap of faith?
In this unfolding adventure, Rev. Peter's life is turned upside down. A Southern pastor in midlife, he finds himself facing a daily struggle with fatigue, disillusionment, doubt, and cynicism. His hopes shrink, relationships contract, dreams fall apart, and transformative faith shrivels into a small, old box of institutionalism. As he encounters "the Others", his experiences with them are...unexpected. And their reality is challenging everything he knows to be "true". The journey may save his faith—if it doesn't destroy him first! Can he find the courage to abandon his sense of stability, embrace new friends, and choose a new beginning?

The Jesus movement of the '70s was a heady time. It was a time of Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. It was a time of the Doobie Brothers telling us that “Jesus Is Just Alright with Me”, and Norman Greenbaum singing about a “Spirit in the Sky”. It was a time when Jesus was going to return any day, according to the best-selling book The Late Great Planet Earth. It was a time of the Rapture, Armageddon, and the Antichrist. Dave Warnock’s faith took root during this intoxicating era.

Story
Imagine a town where the people perpetually live in the 1950s, a place where time has all but stopped and where everyone loves his family, job, and life. In this strange place, only a select few people ever leave the city limits, and even then they leave reluctantly. This is what 15-and-a-half-year-old Benjamin Granault faces as, through a string of amazing events, he finds himself living in a town where he can never talk about modern technology or current events, a place where being an outsider can cost a person his life, and being part of the community may very well cost more.

Baby Boy Fisher was raised in institutions from the moment of his birth in prison to a single mother. He ultimately came to live with a foster family, where he endured near-constant verbal and physical abuse. In his midteens he escaped and enlisted in the navy, where he became a man of the world, raised by the family he created for himself. Finding Fish shows how, out of this unlikely mix of deprivation and hope, an artist was born.

There is hope!
I’m a United Methodist Church clergy person. Church has been the setting for both my deepest joy and my deepest pain. For those who share that both/and, for those who long for healing from spiritual trauma you’ve experienced and perhaps even caused … Light Through a Rusty Roof is a story of hope for you. The author, Rev Roy Terry makes space hear to be seen, heard, appreciated and included in a story that is bigger than ourselves, the story of love, the story of new beginning, the story of hope made known in the gospel of Jesus. You won’t regret spending time as Boyd Barrett narrates the beautifully life changing adventure of Rev Peters and “the Others.” It may just be the hope you need to hear to keep saying yes to Jesus and his church.

Great Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a delightful and insightful look at the ongoing movement of the Spirit. Truly a reminder that faith is a journey not a destination.

Imagination and Hope for the future of the Church!
It's been a long time since a book engaged my imagination the way that Light Through a Rusty Roof did. The journey of love, hope and discovery taken by Rev. Peters is one that we all would be blessed to experience. I found myself yearning for the community lived out by "The Others" and wishing for a plate of collard greens and conversation with Ma Green. It's easy to feel really discouraged by the Church these days, and reading Light Through a Rusty Roof gave me hope for what could be, the Kingdom of God here and now lived out in the love shared between all humans and all of God's creation. Narrated beautifully by Boyd Barrett and written from the heart by author Roy Terry, this is a must read for folks feeling tired and worn out on "religion", but desiring and searching for the love of Christ seen and lived out in community.
