Publisher's summary

Welcome to Lone County, Arkansas, where every corner holds a secret, and the past is never really buried.

Disgraced ex-detective Harper Adams has traded her badge for a desk job at her father's law firm, a move as dull as the small town she's returned to. But things take a turn when a local woman wants to declare her missing husband dead, five years after his mysterious disappearance.

With her father’s firm representing the missing man's wife, Harper seizes the opportunity to delve back into her investigative roots. Her search leads her back to James Malcolm, a former crime boss turned tavern owner, who has his finger on the pulse of every shadowed corner. His offer to help with her investigation catches her by surprise.

Why would a former criminal offer his help unless he has something to gain?

Absolutely riveting!

Book besties! When I say I devoured this book, I’m talking I ate and left no crumbs!

One of my greatest joys is to see James Malcolm between the sheets again. How befitting that he has a tavern and is locked in on all the shady scenes in town.

Swank has done it again and I am over the moon! It is full of mystery, suspense, humor, witty banter, and a plot twist I never saw coming! I can’t get enough of these characters and I look forward to the next book.

Shannon McManus does a phenomenal job of embracing the story! She’s very good at distinguishing between the characters. She’s quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Good Story, but I Hate Harper

Harper is one of the most unlikable main characters ever. James and the story are keeping me here. I hope Jana doesn't wait too long to fix Harper's character.

What a ride!

Yet another hit! DGS has had full attention since the first Rose book, I am still absolutely flabbergasted at the hold this storyline (and all the tributaries) have on me. I cannot wait for the next Harper Adams installment!

Great mystery series

Harper finds herself in more trouble than she can imagine. James Malcom comes to her rescue more than once. Good narration, too.

Another great Harper Adams story

The latest installment of Harper Adams complicated messy life was another twisty, could not put it down story. The book picks up after the rescue of the missing child and death of the perpetrator in the last book. Harper is a disgraced ex-detective who has moved back to her small hometown to start her new life. She’s trying to move past the shooting she was involved in but she’s struggling and drinking too much. Her emotional pain is frequently palpable as the story unfolds. She just received her PI license and is asked to help find out what happened to a man who has been missing for 5 years so he can be declared dead. As she begins investigating, she once again teams up with James Malcolm, a local bar owner and former crime boss. I love that Harper is not a white knight kind of protagonist, she has all kinds of gray mixed in with her goodness which makes her more likable and relatable. One of this author’s greatest strengths is in creating three dimensional characters who are neither all good nor all bad but nevertheless are real and relatable. Harper and James are two such characters. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline as shown through sweet moments, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, secrets, missteps, laughs, and all the big feels. I can’t wait to read more of Harper’s investigations.

Shannon McManus did a great job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

Love this book, series and author

I can’t wait till the next book. I couldn’t stop listening but yet I hated to finish so soon. Very very good book and series. I love how Denise has kept the series untangled with the Rose Gardner and other spin offs.
