About this listen

Introducing a remarkable new character from number-one New York Times best-selling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the Southwestern United States who must confront a new threat...and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona, resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it....

Note: This is the abridged version of Long Road to Mercy.

Average

Just an average story (I expected better from Baldacci) with too many assumptions, provisions from "friends," and inaccuracies. Narration is poor, prompting me to stop listening several times. I'm still not sure I'm up to pushing through to the end.

Atlee Pine, Special Investigator, is Invincible!

Baldacci has created an imaginative thriller in all its aspects, especially the characters! Atlee Pine or should I say "Atlas" because she bears a heavy "emotional" load on her shoulders throughout this thrilling adventure. Where does the main event unfold? Right here at home in the American Southwest; I love that Baldacci kept the framed story right here in the good 'ole USA. Literature mirrors life. The complex problem Atlee deftly handles as Special Investigator for the FBI (though sometimes at key moments she acts on her own), but for the "Greater Good". The brilliant main scenario Baldacci illuminates involving Atlee stirs up the bigger questions, and her role in all of this, in the final outcome, brings to light the Irony of the situation. Her situation seems to be what our situation could someday be! Yes, this is an enjoyable read with a new superstar lead female protagonist and without spoiling the message Baldacci intended (and this is typical of Memory Man and the Fallen), get comfy and hold onto your seat! You're in for a worthwhile epic adventure and in the end, what Baldacci imagines seems real! Given our current issues, Baldacci spins a tale that could be bringing a New light on just how far potential corruption can reach. I can't wait to see what happened to Mercy, and if Baldacci is planning a sequel, for us to know the story of Atlee's long lost sister!

Male narrator distracting

The Male narrator I found distracting as his voices for some characters didnt seem to match the character. but the female narrator very good. Story was fun. hope the lead will be replicated in future books.

Good listen

This is a good and entertaining book. Kept me coming back anxiously with each break. The narrators are good also. No 5 stars due to predictability in several situations.

Audible Sold Twice

This was ok book, but I’d forgotten it. I had already purchased this book and listened to it. It was marked as in my library. I mistakenly purchased it again. Please return my credit.

Narration bad

The “acting” by Brittany Presley is pretty bad...at times I actually grimaced at the voices she was trying to use. The book was very good, though. I’m sure I’ll be reading, or listening, to more Baldacci works!
