About this listen

Lord Fenton is a gambler and a dandy, and he will be stripped of his wealth and position unless he rises to his responsibility - one of which is to marry. Far from being a giddy groom, Fenton chooses the unobjectionable Alice Stanbridge simply because he knew her as a young girl, and his mother feels Alice would make a good wife. Alice, however, has harbored feelings for Fenton since their first meeting years ago, and his proposal is a dream come true. Not only will a match with the most eligible bachelor in London secure her future, but it will also give her a place of distinction and admiration. Had anyone admired Alice for anything before now?

When Alice learns that she is not only an unwanted wife but a demanded one, however, she closes her heart. Only when Lord Fenton faces the greatest trial of his life does he begin to find love beyond the folly. Could a great love come from a beginning such as this?

This book falls into one of my favorite escape the stress in life genres. I do think this novel lived up to the characteristics we expect to see in the genre, and used good character development. I think the reason I am not loving it, is because the Book was mostly tense for a good 70% of the book. It’s not to say there was anything wrong with the story or the characters or anything, it just wasn’t quite what I was looking for. I feel like the author put a lot of effort into demonstrating The problem between the two main characters, but then the part of the story where they “come around“ seem to move rather quickly. I wanted to spend more time there and less time in the quarrelsome part of their relationship.

Clean regency romance with a lot of tension

I really enjoy that the story gives two different perspectives on this developing romance. The narrator does a wonderful job.

Wonderful look into perspectives and relationships

The story had a smooth consistent flow which was well performed. I loved that wicked banter between Lord Fenton and Alice. This had to take place so that the two young adults would eventually realize the futility and immaturity of their actions. Then the author skillfully revealed the pieces of the family puzzle to answer the Foxcroft mystery. Thoroughly enjoyed this story and reading.

Great flow with intensity

I've not read Ms Kilpack's equal. This story is so emotionally painful at times that it altered my mood most unpleasantly. However, the best things often come through much difficulty. Ultimately, this story is fulfilling beyond my initial expectations, and this from a Kilpack fan. The narration is superb.

I loved the principles that were taught of love, redemption, charity, acceptance, patience and forgiveness. Principles we all can learn and benefit from.

People Can Change

but good story. I did get frustrated with the narrator because she was so loud in many parts and so quick and quiet in others that I missed what was being said. it was very aggravating. but the story addressed and worked through difficult things with grace and insight which I appreciated.

a little drawn out
