About this listen

"Funny, touching and infused with wonder, as all love stories should be." (San Francisco Examiner)

The iconic tale of love and loss that has touched the hearts of millions, Love Story has become one of the most adored novels of our time. It has sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and became a blockbuster film starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw. It is the story that told the world, "Love means never having to say you're sorry."

This is the story of Oliver Barrett IV, a rich jock from a stuffy WASP family on his way to a Harvard degree and a career in law, and Jenny Cavilleri, a wisecracking working-class beauty studying music at Radcliffe.

Opposites in nearly every way, Oliver and Jenny are kindred spirits from vastly different worlds. Their attraction to each other is immediate and powerful, and together they share a love that defies everything.

This is their story - a story of two young people and a love so uncompromising it will bring joy to your heart and tears to your eyes.

This is one of my favorite books ever. I listened to it in one sitting. Great for adolescents as well as adults. It's a very special read.

In love with Love Story

This book was hugely popular when it was first released and I can see why. It's a moving story told in a dry, witty prose. The dialogue is very well done and often quite funny. It's a sad yet ultimately very hopeful and redemptive story. I thought this reading by the author was pitch-perfect. His reading captures the dry tone, the humour, and the understated pathos of the story.

A rewarding experience

Beautifully written, this story of star crossed lovers is a Valentine's Day classic! Read it with someone you love!

A Lyrical Tale Of Love...

The raw wit and depth in a book so short is indescribable. Brings a grown woman to tears, and a real man to his knees. Thank you, Mr. Segal.

The best story of love

My mom was in high school or she had just graduated from high school when this book and AWESOME adaptations were barely made to the screenplay. I have been waiting for years to hear the story. I read it, I saw the movie and now... I'm in Love with never having to say you're sorry....that's what it means.

I'm in Love All Over Again

Being interested in all aspects of pop culture from the 60's and 70's, our teenage daughter asked me to buy this for her to listen to while she painted. Hesitating, I finally said yes, trusting that her by-no-means uncritical eye for that period would not desert her in this instance. It didn't. Two hours and 28 minutes later, she emerged from her room declaring, "Love means never having to say you're sorry? That's bull----! Being able to say you're sorry is what makes love work!"

So, thank you Erich Segal, for proving that my wife and I aren't the parental failures that we sometimes fear.

Thank You, Erich Segal

Would you try another book from Erich Segal and/or Erich Segal?

I might read/listen to another book by Erich Sagel. It depends upon who recorded it.

Has Love Story turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I'd read another story from this genre.

What didn’t you like about Erich Segal’s performance?

I didn't like his performance because he just seemed to read the text. There was no emotion where there needed to be, especially at the end.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Love Story?

I wouldn't have cut any of the scenes as much as have embellished upon some. He really could have expounded upon the main characters love for one another and how they spoke to one another was fun, not matter-of-fact like.

This is a fast listen.
