About this listen

Is it possible to work with purpose, stay in love, and raise a healthy family - all at the same time? Popular podcast hosts and founders of Plywood People Jeff and André Shinabarger share proven research, insightful practices, and stories from 100 working couples to cast new vision for the modern family.

We know the harm that comes from prioritizing work or family at the cost of the other, so what is the secret to living a fully engaged and balanced life in both work and family? Hosts of the Love or Work podcast, Jeff and André Shinabarger posed this question to 100 working couples - from professional athletes and artists, entrepreneurs and CEOs, to fashion icons and church leaders. They partnered with the Barna Group for a yearlong nationwide research project to find the answer, and now, along with their own unique story of juggling demanding careers and a growing family, Jeff and André offer their findings: a new vision for the modern family and a path forward for the socially conscious working partnership.

In this one-of-a-kind book, they address head-on the complex tensions in career fulfillment, working parent guilt, timing, and marital and spiritual health. With proven research, personal experience, and applicable insights, Jeff and André reveal the practices that will help you cultivate your own, individual, purpose-fueled family.

More than a formula, Jeff and André found that work-life balance is about embracing where you're at in the journey, pursuing your passion with your family, and living the adventure of it all together.

Incredible Insights Regardless of Your Life Stage

As a husband, a father of three and an individual hoping to leave the world a little better off than how I came into it, I was really excited to dig into Jeff and André Shinabarger's distillation of their "Love or Work" podcast. This book did not disappoint (I blew through it in one day!)

For starters, I love books narrated by the authors because it helps add a degree of personality that brings stories and statistics to life in fresh ways. In this situation, both Jeff and André were compelling narrators, which isn't surprising given their podcasting experience! I also loved how Jeff and André were able to weave in "live" audio clips from their podcast in a few key places. This small touch helped make the stories come through in any even more sincere fashion.

Beyond the audio experience, the content itself was top shelf. As a fairly center-brained person, I enjoyed the mix of statistics with personal anecdotes from Jeff and André as well as many, many others. I also appreciated their willingness to tackle the tough topics (ahem, sex anyone?) and to acknowledge their own limitations and biases. This frankness made it easy to take their research, their experiences and their stories at face value, without having to be concerned about what other "spin" they might be trying to put on them. While you may not agree with every starting point or every conclusion, I don't think that's the point, as much as it is using this incredible body of work as a jumping-off point for conversations with your spouse/partner and your life community. To that end, I also really liked the challenges at the end of each chapter. For me, the tough part will be making the time to do the challenges with my wife!

If you're someone who's in a relationship or knows someone in a relationship, or if you have kids or are in community with people who have kids (to be clear, that's pretty much EVERYONE), this book is for you. I was challenged, encouraged, convicted and inspired by what I heard, and I think you will be as well. One final note: do not skip over the forward; there are some great nuggets from Lecrae there that you don't want to miss!

Good book with propaganda in it

This is a good book overall, but be aware, there is a lot of liberal and feminist propaganda in it, especially at the end. How does painting your son's fingernails pink relates to the topic? I don't get it. It would have been better to leave out these things.
