About this listen

Jack Reilly’s luck ran out just before the war did. Released on a medical discharge shortly after the end of the war with the Serkins, he went out into the galaxy looking for a job. Signing onto the Glacier Runner 17, an old and rundown cargo ship, Rielly finds himself working for a clueless captain, mixed-up in an intergalactic conspiracy, on the run from assassins, and involved with two women in relationships that he could only call "complicated".

Fans of Matthew O. Duncan will recognize the universe as the same as from the New Terra Sagas, but this is not a sequel. This is a stand-alone spin-off with new characters, new worlds, and in a different format. Told in the first person from Reilly’s perspective, this is a fast-moving, non-stop sci-fi adventure.

I enjoy sci-fi,I have about 2000 audible "books". Wanting something different from Black fleet, mil-0ps, reading numerous reviews, starting many audibles... I tried this one... I think it was the narrator's voice, Clint Eastwood like, fitting the character portrayed. Like in Grand Torino... 0ld disgruntled and hard as nails.
I didn't care for everything.. but enjoyed the story enough to listen to Bøøk 2.

Thø not perfect, its what I needed.

I really loved how well read this novel was. It's rare to hear a narrator carry though from beginning to end without a mishap.
The world building and immediacy of their predicament built a large part of the story. However Lt. O'Reilly handled these hurdles like a well trained athlete. I also like that none of the MCs went on killing sprees. Instead O'Reilly used all the calculation he could muster to find a go around.
That really is uncommon in today's plot devices.
This series really has potential to become an unforgettable saga of space dramas.

The narration was excellent.

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

Jack Reilly, is a good-natured and easily likable character. As I learned more about this character, I felt that he was trying to do the right thing. But, circumstances that he found himself in, really challenged him. He kept true to this virtue and was able to change not only his luck but also helped stop a civil war from happening. I enjoyed this action/adventure/sci-fi novel.

Have heard this saying before and really understood the term space opera but now I can say this audible is A Space Opera. You have a loner who is a mechanic on a space transport ship, a women on the same ship who and finally a officer of the Space JAG. The two mechanics can not stay out of trouble and after the ship they were on crashed and burned they are accused of murder now the third person of this trio comes into place the Pretty Female JAG officer.
In addition to the above you have pirates, murders, deserters and finally criminal mobs put all these factors together you have the perfect space opera.
The story is based around the crew of the Glacier Laser who is a very badly outfitted space transport now the captain is doing some shady deals and the ship crashed the the two mechanics one who was on leave and one who had quit. They are thrown into a world of hurt they are accused of murder and arrested and then the story starts to get interesting and full of mismatched romance and adventures.
I truly recommend this auibal and I am sure you enjoy it and make sure you have the second book in that one the adventures continues

I very much enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Lt Reilly finds himself and his companions in so many no win situations that they consistently find a way out. The action is continuous and the story keeps you engaged. The book is short enough that you can listen to it in a day. Matthew Duncan and Dave Cruse make for a good team for this story.

I would recommend you listen/read this one before going onto book two. This way you get more of a feel for the characters. I actually liked Lt. Reilly in this book, which shows that the author knows how to write a good character.
It has plenty of action and is fast paced.
I had no problems with the narrator I thought he suited the book.

I found this book to be an excellent listen with a not op Mc which is getting harder to find these days. You have an above average guy thrust in to this situation but he has good skills and makes it work. My only issue is the love triangle, I wish that part was just left out. I was able to listen to this book straight through with no breaks needed (minus stopping for work).

I definitely recommend this book and am starting book 2 soon.

Great story just to short.

First, to get it out of the way. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
That being said, this is a great story for anyone that loves the Science Fiction of the John W. Campbell era. This story has the flavor of those stories written by Andre Norton, Eric Frank Russell, and others of that time.
The story flows well, The narrator gives life to the characters and, and the combination I found, left the story ending much sooner than I wanted.

A great old-fashioned Space Opera
