Ray Porter and JN Chaney!

Wow! This was so much fun! As a huge fan of 80s action movies, this book hit all the right notes. Add to that the stellar narration from one of my favorite actors in the business and you’ve got an amazing book. I’ve read all of JN Chaney’s books as well and this is an exceptional entry in his library. I can’t wait for the sequel!

Barely okay..

This was good, but mostly bad!

Dr. Hastings was a complete idiot and his daughter, Elise, was a foul-mouthed little witch, for a teenager. In the beginning it was okay but her attitude lasted until the very last page of the book.

As for Halek Cain, I can't even decide if I liked him either. BUT Ray Porter made Cain fabulous, so there's that! I loved X-37, he was a smart*ss and funny at the same time.

As for the story itself? I found it to be repetitive and confusing. There was too many bad guys, and lots of killing. I'm not sure I want to go any further with this series.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 90 times.

As for the narrator: Phenomenal!

Fun and badass!

Enjoyed this book, it is fast moving, interesting and badass. Kind of like Dirty Harry meets universal soldier in Space! Enjoy

Reaper cometh!

It took a little bit for me to get into it but once I did the storyline was captivating and paste well throughout. Sometimes the character was petulant and could be childish but recovered soon after.

Hit the Spot

I listen to a lot of different sci-fi books and this was a breathe of fresh air. Had all you love in this genre with fun dialogue and a great story. I like Ray Porter and I think this was his most dynamic and well done performance I've heard so far.

Had the feel of a writer's first book

The plot was interesting and the main character was engaging but this felt like someone's first attempt at a novel. Maybe that has more to say about the editor. I could never get a clear mental image of the setting. The story had weird jumps and lurches which left me having to reread sections because I couldn't figure how the characters got to where they are.

S Kaye

Always love an under story! Ray was great as voice actor of course. Never like the cursing, but loved the characters. Enjoy!

Great series

This should be taken as a review of the entire series. I am up to about book 7 now. The Story and Performance elements are amazing. Porter does a great job as always. I’m a big Porter fan. After a few books they change to Tom Taylorson, who does an even better job and sounds like the character in my head. I’m a fan of Chaney but this is the first work of Moon’s I’ve encountered. Great stuff. If I had one criticism, it’s that character growth is almost nonexistent at the start, which actually makes sense in retrospect. You will like this if you like sci fi. It’s very much Deus Ex in space.

Suppose you read an 8 hour audio book with almost no plot.

What we have here is an 8 hour audio book with almost no plot. Lots of space military sci-fi action. Mechanically augmented super soldier kills all the bad guys, but secretly has a heart of gold. Not a bad formula even though it’s been done a thousand times. But in this case there is little plot. A few things happen in the last 30 minutes to set up the next book. Maybe a plot will develop if you keep going in the series, but as a stand alone book it’s pretty bad. I have to decide if this did enough to keep going; probably not. Ray Porter does a great job as usual.
