About this listen

A hand-picked cadre of warriors, they had the fierce courage of their Scots forefathers, combined with the stealth and cunning of the Indians who lived beside them in the wilderness. Battling the French in a no-holds-barred combat, they forged a new brand of honor, became a new breed of men - MacKinnon's Rangers.

Iain MacKinnon had been forced to serve the British crown, but compassion urged him to save the lovely lass facing certain death at the hands of the Abenaki. He'd defied his orders, endangered his brothers, his men and his mission, all for a woman. But when he held Annie's sweet body in his arms, he could feel no regret. Though he sensed she was hiding something from him, it was too late to hold back his heart.

In love and war, there are times when the only course of action is...surrender.

Loved it!

If you like historical romantic novels you can not go wrong with Mackinnon's Rangers. Great story based around early American history, great narrator. I am now on book 2.

Heartwarming! Exciting! Intriguing!

Pamela Clare may be my new favorite author! And Kaleo Griffith is beyond good! This book keeps the listener engaged at all times. There's never a dull moment! I caught myself anticipating what was to happen next. If there's a negative thing to be said about Kaleo Griffith, it would be that he didn't read FAST ENOUGH! LOL!!! This book has certainly pulled me into the entire series! Worth the credit? ABSOLUTELY!

Very much enjoyed!

after getting used to listening to more contemporary titles, it took a chapter to start really getting into the story, glad I stuck to it as it was a very enjoyable story.

I listened to this book at 1.40

I dont know why I haven't listened/read Pamela Clare in so long. I love her books.

This book is about 3 bothers during the French/Indian War. And how they find true love in a very harsh land while still fighting.

Solid 5 stars

Vocal artist Keleo Griffith was excellent. 7 stars out of 5.

I really liked this. Some depth to the characters.

This is the first Pamela Clare book I've read. I will definitely read more. There are good guys, a really evil guy and, surprisingly for this genre, a complex guy (Wentworth) who you assume will be evil, but turns out to be sort of decent when you consider the times in which he lives. It's a stretch, but I can see Wentworth being rehabilitated as the hero in a future book???

This is such a good light read. You get historical romance (light on the historical creds, I will admit) a happy ending and the setup for future Rangers stories. There are steamy scenes including one really kind of weird shaving scene ......

This is also the first Kaleo Griffith narration for me. He is so very good.

I highly recommend if you're looking for a good story, a good narrator and a little more character complexity than romance novels usually provide. .

Wonder series, read so perfect fully! I can't wait for next edition.
The characters are so well defined as is the color in the story. Feels loud you are in the story!

Where to begin

There are a number of things that contribute to how well a book can be rated. Performance always contributes so beginning there, I'll say the Mr. Griffith does an outstanding job with realistic accents and emphasis making his reading truly a performance not just a reading.
Now to judge the story there are a number of things I look for. Obviously in a historical novel, the story must be true to the history. This book meets that measure admirably. Having read a number of fiction and non fiction works about this period, I am familiar enough with it to see that Ms Clare has done her homework and brought the truth of the time to the fiction of her story. While McKinnon's rangers are a fictional group, they are accurately patterned after ranger groups that were active on the American frontier during the 17th & 18th century.
So, with that sound base, Ms Clare has written a thrilling story built around a love story that is realistic and exciting.
With this combination of performance and story, this first book in the series can only be rated as high as possible, and invites the listener to order the next one before the first is finished so there is no time spent waiting to continue the adventure.

Book One of MacKinnon's Rangers

This is Iain and Annie's story. Iain is the eldest MacKinnon brother. He is forced into service in the British army by William Wentworth - one of his family's greatest enemies. When he comes across Annie in the forest, he saves her from certain death against his orders. Thus begins a romance to write home about.

Audio notes - Kaleo Griffith is a god. His use of accents is wonderful and while he differentiates between men and women, he does not try to sound like a woman.

If you're looking for a well-written, fantastically narrated story about love amongst war, this is the book for you.
