About this listen

In a war-torn land where magic talent is both something to be hidden and a part of nature itself, trouble is brewing. A demonic god, sealed away eons ago by a legendary warrior called the Maiden of Flowers, is rumored to be about to rise once more. A new Maiden of Flowers must rise, as well, and her survival is key to defeating the demonic god - and her death, the key to his resurrection. At the heart of this conflict lies Princess Orchid, who may or may not be the Maiden of Flowers reborn. But can a sheltered princess really be all that stands between the survival of humanity and total destruction?

Magical, indeed

Fast-moving, excellent plot line. The author has a gift for dialogue. The narrator, Kolbe Handal, is a real find. At times you’d swear there were several people providing the voices, instead of just one.! Hope the author sticks with this narrator for the series.

An excellent first showing

Recording Quality: With only one notable error in recording (early on, and missable), easily comparable to the mishandling of certain words or phrases in the first Dresden Files audio book, the recording is nearly flawless. Kolbe Handal does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life with a performance comparable to that of James Marsters in the aforementioned series.

Writing: Fast paced, coherent, and punchy. Story beats move quickly, but usually not too quickly, and the language is evocative without being overly descriptive. A high technical skill is present and on display.

Story: This book is a ride. A classic fantasy tale of lost innocence, but it does not pull any punches when it comes to that concept. Dont let the characters' naivete or the innocent tone lent to them by the reader fool you, this story is dark and brutal, and puts its cast through the ringer. Yet at no point does the brutality seem inconsequential or unnecessary, as it all appears to be building toward dramatic character development and serves to inform several plot points. All in all, a fantastic flagship to start a series with.

Magic: The magic system is well defined, though loosely so. This is largely due to our perspective characters relatively fragile understanding of the forces they wield, as the magic in the setting g is implied to be far deeper and more structured than we see in this first book. It will be interesting to see how crunchy and fleshed out the magic system in this universe gets as the series progresses.
