About this listen

Seven vengeful sisters. Seven fairytale kingdoms. Seven daughters of Eville.

Everyone dreams of marrying a prince - except for me. I am nothing more than a pawn in my adoptive mother's diabolical plot against the seven kingdoms. I was the chosen tool, her sharpened blade that would cut the deepest into the heart of the kingdom of Baist. But like all deadly weapons, my wedding is two-edged sword that could cost me my soul.

For I am Rosalie, one of the adopted daughters of Lady Eville, and it is my duty to enter into a loveless and hate-filled marriage with the narcissistic Crown Prince of Baist. My choices and heart are not my own to give. Yet even in the thick of dire situations, beastly vengeance can give way to beautiful attraction.

ACOTAR Fans! Magic, Hate, Fayes(?) & Perhaps Love?

LONG REVIEW, BUT NO SPOILERS: Have you ever wondered if you were destined for greatness? What about the greatness ruling a kingdom at the side of a crown prince you act like he's bipolar AF? What if it's just a casual day in your Tower with your six adopted sisters and your Adopted witch of a mother who has trained you in the arts of magic and your mom just randomly looks at you and is like hey, go pack some BEEP, cuz you're about to get married today! You're excited! You're thrilled!

While you may have some awesome magic powers, you do not have the gift of foresight, so you have no clue where you're going, who it is you are marrying. So imagine your surprise when you roll up at the castle that just announced the engagement of their crown prince to his love and that their wedding is also occurring TODAY. Did I mention that you happen to be at the castle in the one land of the seven kingdoms that happens to be the only anti magic & hates your kind?

Have you ever had to be fitted for a wedding dress in a matter of minutes when you're tall and the person that the wedding dress was intended for was short? how about being given slippers without any souls in the bottom of them so that you can't run away? How about never looking at your husband's face throughout the entire short ceremony or after because your veil is so thick and moments after it was over being told by your now husband that you are never to leave your stately rooms and that he never wants to see your horrid hag witch face.

Well, thanks to that veil and your ability to use some glamor and other kinds of magic things aren't totally awful, because nobody actually knows what you look like, so you are at least able to attend your own wedding feast, but not as the princess.

To your dismay and delight your new husband isn't even in attendance. You're starving and that's literally the only reason you're there, so as you're snagging meat pastries and hanging back in the shadows you meet the most beautiful man you've ever seen in your life and you have your first kiss and its is phenomenal. Sadly you realize you will never be able to have this kind of love because you are married to a man who hates you and everything that you are...

I'm going to stop there, and just FYI everything that I've included happens within the first couple pages so I'm not giving any spoilers.

note: I mentioned ACOTAR fans will LOVE this book, but there isn't really a lot of spice in it. this is more about character development and a woman coming into her own rights and power even though she is treated like dirt by everybody. imagine being a person that can harness magic but can't use it really unless somebody ask you for help in the castle. Oh and your husband is in love with another woman who you have to constantly see while you're at court sneaking around and pretending to be just a maid.

Good Enough

The story, characters and narration seem to develop at the same pace. Starts off thin and shaky, and ends with a rich finish. Although, the story may have tried just a little too hard in the final boss battle.

The narration was the most irksome thing about this production. In the beginning, the narrator was green and finding her way. Her pacing was choppy and stilted many times, like she was picking her path while barefoot in a field of broken glass. In the end, she had a firm grasp on all the characters and was confident in pushing the story in the arc intended by the author. Her portrayal of the Goblin was absolute gold from the first word he utters. Even though he was supposed to only be a side kick, he was the unintended Star. Rose would not have survived without him. I want to see more of him. He made me laugh at every appearance. A cuddly, gross creature. Awesome.

The end conflict was messy, messy, messy. Like it was a slippery thing and the writer had trouble keeping it in her grasp. She manages, just barely, but I had to rewind several passages, several times, in an effort to work out exactly what was happening. The resolution scene was very lukewarm. A nicely tied bow so people can put it to bed and sleep without concern

I will listen to the next book, for sure.

Love, love, love!

I completed this book via Audible. I couldn't stop listening! I would drive slower just to listen more! I absolutely love the storyline! Yes, it is a spin-off of Disney (obviously) but yet, it doesn't follow Disney at all. Just the "theme." Cannot wait to continue this series!

Love the subtle nods to the original fairy tales

Excited for this series! This first installment had me hooked from the get-go. The pretty ex fiancee trope always relates to me personally so I enjoyed that touch.

I’m ‘angry’ at how good this was.

Okay so I initially downloaded this book because it was free. And I saw the second was free also so I was like, “hey okay, I can read a couple in the series and drop it, nbd.” Like I’ve done a dozen times before when a series isn’t all included in my membership. But then I listened to it and I wasn’t expecting much. I’m not super into retelling so I didn’t give it much of a chance… but then it was like, really good.
So good that I immediately started the next one.
Which was also good…
So good in fact that I BOUGHT the next one and the next and the next and the next and the next. I am *very* stingy with my credits, so to spend so many on one series is practically unheard of.

But here’s the thing, they were so good.
Yes, the general plot was the same for all of them. Daughter everyone hates, has to get a kingdom for revenge. Also picks up a cute guy and a lil creature pal.
But they were all so unique in their stories and while I knew how they’d end, I was still invested in each of their stories. I did wait until I read them all to write this review because i didn’t want to write a glowing review for the beginning of the series, if I ended up not liking the ending. Gladly, I’m sitting here writing a glowing review for the series.

My biggest gripe is I wish there were like 35 more books in the series.

Pretty good book

Some things were a bit expectable, I won’t give anything away of course, but like… 🙄 I knew that would happen eventually. All the marks of your typical fairytale retelling. The way the typical pieces were included was great, very Easter eggy. Some people are saying the prince sucked for being stuck up/narcissistic. He didn’t. He was your typical beast archetype and followed basically the exact same path as Belles beast. Overall I liked it, I’ll read the next book. I really liked that it was pretty clean. I didn’t like the narrators… sound effects.
