About this listen

Are you struggling to figure out who you are now that you’re a mama? Do you feel like you’re coming last in your own life? Do you feel guilty for not loving every moment of this motherhood gig?

As someone who used to put themselves last - doing everything she thought was "right" for her children and family, but not really listening to what her body and her spirit was begging for - Amy understands firsthand the overwhelm and complex range of emotions that mothers face. Amy’s background as a journalist set her on the path to uncover all that she could about the latest research on matrescence, the transition a woman undergoes when she becomes a mother. She now shares what she’s learned in the hope that it will help you navigate this stage of your life.

Mama Rising includes interviews with experts, case studies and Amy’s own tried-and-tested advice on how to reconnect with the woman you are underneath all that washing, cleaning, and caring. Full of useful and empowering insights that will help you change the way you feel about motherhood - and yourself - so you and your whole family can flourish.

Wow I feel seen.

I have SO many clips stored from this book. It is literally the first audible I’ve ever finished. I am grateful for Amy’s words. I don’t necessarily know all that will come of this but I think even just an awareness will have an affect as I continue to strive to do less and connect more with my son in this new phase of me. I am seeing how trying to hold on to an older, separate version of me is, in fact, how I could have ultimately recreated childhood wounds for my son. We’ve had some hard conversations in our house before this book even and I hope we continue to grow and flourish as a family unit.

Helpful perspective for new mamas

I’ve been struggling with PPD and anxiety, grieving the old me. This book puts the struggles within myself and with society in perspective. Worth the credit for sure!

Missed the mark

I got this book because I was interested in the idea of “matresence” but it missed the mark for me. I didn’t realize it was more of a mindfulness, spiritual (Buddhism), positive thinking type book.

I really didn’t identify with the author’s experience in motherhood. That was okay because how is one author going to describe all women’s experience. But when she started talking about how her husband can’t remember the kids birthdays and “those” types of things only a woman can do and that is what makes us special, I couldn’t listen anymore. Men are just as capable of doing those things as women are and we would all be better for it if they did value those things and participate in them.

Some of the things she attributed to the experience of matresence I felt were just effects of late stage capitalism and patriarchal ideals. I do think matresence is a real thing, I just think the author superimposed her beliefs into what it is.

Not what I thought

I thought this book was going to be a more critical/scientific look at matresence and not a self help guide. I couldn’t bring myself to finish this book and regret purchasing it, as I did not relate to the author and found some of her thoughts annoying. I fast forwarded a lot of the book and it overall just didn’t land with me. If you’re looking for a self help book this may be for you, but I think the description is inaccurate.
