About this listen

Emily thought magic only existed in the books she read as a child. When a handsome stranger enlists her help to uncover who tried to kill the princess of another world, she learns those books were more than just stories. She discovers the Four Regions - a realm where magical creatures fled to escape human persecution. It is there Emily finds the power, passion, and friendships she had always secretly craved.

The determined demon who guides her.
The irresistible vampire who entices her.
The excitable demoness who supports her.
The quiet elf who understands her.

Now Emily must unmask a murderer while wearing a mask herself, resisting a growing temptation that could ruin her newfound family.

Fun listen

This is a good book. This book has twist on the supernatural world. Emily embraces this new world fast. She starts learning things fast with the little that she is told. And when given a opportunity to do what she wants she doesn't.

my only negative is some times the narrator makes Emily sound like a little kid but other then that narrator did good.

A fascinating new world!

Ms. Finke has created a brand new world full of mystery, terror, and wonder. The bright world we live in contrasts vividly against the dark realm, where everything is made of metal and wool and not a green thing in sight.

Right away, you’re not sure which characters to trust (though there are some strong sinister vibes if you look for them!) Every new person the mc meets could be an enemy, including her own father.

There are some truly marvelous characters, I am particularly fond of Daughter of Brawn!

There is so much to this world, between politics, creatures, magic, and the different realms.

I’m excited to explore the world further (I’ve already started book 2!)

I listened to this book on audible, and also have an ebook copy, but the cover is so pretty, I’ll probably be getting a physical copy at some point as well! The author also narrates the book and she has quite a nice range of voices!

Slow start, but ends strong

Overall, this was a good book. The beginning third, probably, is a lot of world building that just feels like an info dump. But pressing on beyond that, when the story really gets moving and then we get to the climax and conclusion, it’s much better developed as an overall tale.

Emily is whisked away from the human realm by someone claiming he needs her help to save her sister, who she never knew she had. She is taken to this fairytale realm, full of demons, vampires, dwarves, and all kinds of other fantastical creatures that she never knew were real, only to learn that she herself is not fully human, and has magic of her own. But humans aren’t welcome in this realm, which was created to protect magical creatures from humans in the first place, so Emily feels less than welcome, and finds it difficult to feel motivated to help, especially for a sister she never even knew she had. Meanwhile, she finds herself drawn to her sister’s fiance, as well as the mysterious vampire that he has helping him in this endeavor.

Emily didn’t have much in her life in the human world. Her mother passed away from cancer a few years prior, and she didn’t have any really close friends or family to speak of otherwise. So as she develops friendships and feelings for those trying to help her save her sister, the thought of returning home becomes less and less appealing. But the fae laws only allow one child to stay, while the second is usually “disposed of”, since they were twins, so staying doesn’t seem to be an option for her. Despite that, she is determined to save her sister. As the mysteries are revealed, there are a few unexpected twists, and the story is able to keep you on your toes and guessing a bit through to the end. There are a few loose ends left open for a continuing story, but for these characters, there is some level of resolution, a happy for now that will lead them onto the next book.

Fun and different

I really enjoyed this story. It used classical creatures in different ways. The heroine was likable. The situations she had to deal with kept me wondering what she would do, how she would come out all of this if at all. I’ll be checking out the author’s next book too.

Read this ASAP!!!

This book was amazing! Right from the beginning I was drawn in from all the mystery, and just when I thought I knew what was happening it... BAM I was thrown for a loop.

This is a story about when you find out fairy-tales and all things supernatural are true.

This story kept me wanting to know more, I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series!

Engaging Story

This book is well written and captivating. I was caught by surprise quite a few times and the twists and turns kept me going.

Narration was great and brought the characters to life.

The story flew by and before I knew there were some shocking developments I did not see coming at all!!! I found this book hard to put down and the characters interesting. I need the next book ASAP!

alot going on

I took some time after finishing to determine how I felt about this book and I'm still on the fence. As a story it is OK. The narrator did a decent job I think. This book is also very teen, but at times I thought it read as even younger. The premise is that there is a girl who gets pulled from her world to go act as the princess, who happens to be her long lost twin. Won't go into the details of how that happened. During her pretending very few people seem to.notice and of course her sister's fiance doesn't really love her sister but fancies her. Everyone seems to really like her immediately. She hates being there then one day doesn't wanna leave. In the end she gets everything she wants but how it happens is quick, vague, and honestly uneventful. I probably won't read book 2 because they are different characters and I didnt enjoy the story enough to continue in this world. I may have listened if it was the same just to complete the story line but this one wrapped up enough for these specific characters that I'm happy to leave it.
