About this listen

There's always more beneath the surface.

Once, Hope Payne was a mermaid, performing at the local theme park and captivating audiences young and old.

Today, she's married to a pragmatic marine biologist who has filled the pool in their backyard with flounder for a special study. Before he begins, the fish vanish - echoing a loss Hope alone can understand. She senses there's something underwater, something alive and hungry for more, but is she in too deep to ever resurface?

New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult's "Mermaid" is a spellbinding short story about the sacrifice it takes to swim again.

Short short for Jodi Picoult

It's a great short story from Jodi Picoult, no doubt, but I just wanted more. I barely got an understanding for the characters and the situation and it was over.

JUST PLUNGE RIGHT IN

I believe this story is best enjoyed if you go into it blind so you can be fascinated and surprised as the story unfolds, then interpret it for yourself in the end. I read it, then I listened to it... and the second time around I was able to correlate the past and present stories and the metaphors, and understand how they all bled into each other. It's so brilliantly written. Complex and bursting with descriptive analogies and symbolism. We get an incredible range of emotions from this beautifully lyrical and atmospheric short story. The narration is good, and the Kindle In Motion feature raises this already spectacular piece to a whole new level.

Wanted More! Wonderful haunting story.

Jodi Picoult never disappoints. I have read everything she has written and loved every one. This is no exception. Too short though. Would have loved to delve a little deeper (no pun intended!) into the characters and the issue. As always, Jodi takes the time, even in a short story, to explain and offer amazing facts and knowledge of which she writes.
Narration was beautifully voiced.

Too short

This is a short story not a full novel. I felt a little mislead. I love the author and the story was still good.

Not a fan

I absolutely love Jodi Picoult. She is my favorite author, but this story was so hard to follow. Like all of her stories, it was magnificently written, but it was a complete enigma. As someone that has gone through a pregnancy loss, I can understand what she was going for, but it perhaps went too far and needed to be reeled in a bit before ending.

Very short!

it's an interesting story, but I didn't realize it was a short story when I purchased it. imagine my disappointment when I saw that it was 45 min of listening time.
I feel like I'd love to read more about the characters and the events of the story, but it just ended. I just felt like it left me hanging before even it began. I am interested in reading more by this author, but this was disappointing. the narrator did a good job.

A Story of A Woman’s Search for Healing

Hope and Nick are Marine Biologists. Nick gets approval for a study in the pool on the backyard. Hope was pregnant when they married. Their story is one of how the mind and heart heals and mends. Great performance.

underdeveloped

I was curious about the Kindle in Motion type book, and seeing one by a favorite author, decided to check it out. I really don’t think the Kindle in Motion added anything to the story. The story itself was just okay, too short and underdeveloped.

WHAT AN AMAZING, IMMERSING EXPERIENCE!

This is one of the most immersing books I've ever read. It was like watching a movie. To listen to the narration while reading along and watching the pages come to life. The story on its on was really good and I enjoyed the writing style but collectively, the book was amazing! I have a pretty active imagination and while reading, books play out in my head but this was so much better. I simply must find more books like this. This is the first book I've read from this author but I see from her previous works that she's the author of the book that one of my favorite movies was based on. I'll certainly be taking in more of Jodi's work.
