About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Charles Martin's breathtaking novel of love and redemption.

Charlie Finn had to grow up fast, living alone by age 16. Highly intelligent, he earned a life-changing scholarship to Harvard, where he learned how to survive and thrive on the outskirts of privileged society. That skill served him well in the cutthroat business world, as it does in more lucrative but dangerous ventures he now operates off the coast of Miami. Charlie tries to separate relationships from work. But when his choices produce devastating consequences, he sets out to right wrongs, traveling to Central America, where he will meet those who have paid for his actions, including a woman and her young daughter.

Will their fated encounter present Charlie with a way to seek the redemption he thought was impossible - and free his heart to love one woman as he never knew he could?

I enjoyed this book a great deal but miss the depth and flow of words that I know this author is capable of. While the story was moving, the end notes were incredibly powerful. Keep ‘em coming, Mr. Martin.

Good book with great end notes

I really loved this book. Beautifully written, the right mix of light story with real substance. Not heavy or dark but not just fluff. Was a five start listen until the final 15 minutes. The preachy end portion "On Building a Well" was just too much. Those who believe in God (myself included) will find the message the author means to convey without having it rammed down their throat with a 15 minute lecture. Historical perspective was interesting but self absorbed, preachy lecture was frustrating. Sadly, I wish I had just stopped listening when the fiction was over. The beautiful final notes of the story would have been reverberating, instead of a guilt-trip lecture that has me sighing. I may try another by Charles Martin, but I will admit I'm a bit reluctant. Narration was excellent.

Wonderful, except "On Building a Well" epilogue

This book is so good - you don't want to put it down nor do you want it to end. Really makes you think and what it causes you to understand is so important to know. If everyone so blessed with even the ability to buy this book or download it would read it and understand the perspective it brings, we would all be in a better place.

A must read or listen

This book really blessed my heart! Martin captured the spirit of the islanders, revealing their hope and faith in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Praise the Lord for Christian authors.

I had forgotten how wonderful a writer Charles Martin is. Loved this book and added the rest of his to my wish list. Don't miss When Crickets Cry. Or any others for that matter. By the way I don't write reviews. But this is worthy.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book.

In the book, we follow Charlie, a very bright guy with a poor start in life that takes advantage of the opportunities that land in his path in order to make money. He's a little greedy, a little lazy and very independent, and those attributes take him from investment banking to drug trafficking. But this isn't about the seedy side of either of these careers. It's about Charlie's inner life and the path he takes to another direction.

It's a great story, and made marvelous by the narration by Kevin Stillwell. His reading of the story takes it from a really good story to something pretty wonderful.

An Unexpected Joy

This was the first book I’ve listened to or read by Charles Martin, and it will stick with me for quite a while. Incredibly well-written and captivating, the novel touched a deep place in my heart. I love that this story came from a real-life event, and hearing the telling of
it at the end was beautiful. Would definitely recommend this novel. The narrator also captured my attention and held it. Pleasant and deep-voiced, he guided me through the story and made the characters come alive.

Powerful, gut-wrenching, honest, and beautiful

This story has touched my heart like no other. It was magnificently written and perfectly narrated. Living in the States, it’s impossible to understand what real poverty is. With the love and faith of God we can do amazing things.

This story is so interesting and different from many other stories from Charles Martin. When the story was over it was already five stars in my mind but there was a chapter at the end where the author explains some of the true events that lead him to write the story. Wish I could give it more stars.

An amazing story
