This audiobook is narrated by the author, which I always appreciate. The short book covers many aspects of how social media affects our lives. It is mostly focused on the hidden negative affects, but also mentions the positive side.

The author takes anecdotal experiences from his own life, and how social media posts have ruined job opportunities for his friends. He tells us stories that hit the national news of how people lost scholarships to their dream schools due to silly posts made when they were underage. He also cites research and mentions statistics to back up his claims.

He mentions many of the social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and even dating apps. He stays mostly neutral and presents a well rounded view on some delicate topics. When he mentioned his background is in journalism, it made a lot of sense because it shows in the way he presents information.

The only criticism I have is that he says that social media platforms give warnings that information may not be legitimate, but doesn’t present the other side of the story. Sometimes this is true, but very often it is also because the post doesn’t agree with the narrative the news outlets want us to know. It is also a way that social media is starting to take away our freedom of speech. By labeling certain things as “fake news,” just because they mention certain hot topics.

Overall, this book was well researched and presented. I’d recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how social media affects us personally, and as a society. It would be especially helpful for young adults to clean up their pages before job interviews, or who compare themselves to “friends” they see on social media, or who need a social media detox.
