About this listen

The number one New York Times best seller about a famous novelist held hostage in a remote location by his “number one fan.” One of “Stephen King’s best…genuinely scary” (USA Today).

Best-selling novelist Paul Sheldon thinks he’s finally free of Misery Chastain. In a controversial career move, he’s just killed off the popular protagonist of his beloved romance series in favor of expanding his creative horizons. But such a change doesn’t come without consequences. After a near-fatal car accident in rural Colorado leaves his body broken, Paul finds himself at the mercy of the terrifying rescuer who’s nursing him back to health - his self-proclaimed number one fan, Annie Wilkes.

Annie is very upset over what Paul did to Misery and demands that he find a way to bring her back by writing a new novel - his best yet, and one that’s all for her. After all, Paul has all the time in the world to do so as a prisoner in her isolated house...and Annie has some very persuasive and violent methods to get exactly what she wants...

“King at his best...a winner!” (The New York Times)

“Unadulteratedly terrifying...frightening.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Classic King...full of twists and turns and mounting suspense.” (The Boston Globe)

Oldie but a Goodie!

Ahh, the memories... Back in high school , I read Misery for a 10th grade book report, mainly to piss my 60+ year old hag of an ELA teacher off, instead, I instantly fell in love with all things Stephen King! From there on out, any time I wanted to read a good book that would, I would look to Stephen King's award-winning collection! Anyway, I'm not here to tell you my life story, but rather to review of this incredible tale of a writer who goes off the road in CO & is then later "rescued" by a woman who lives nearby. The writer, whose name is Paul, was rendered unconscious and his legs were severely broken. If Annie hadn't come along when she did, he wouldn't have survived the crash, now, the question is, will he survive Annie??

All I can say is that I'm a quadriplegic & have been in a wheelchai my entire life. I rely on people to take care of me, even if you''re not disabled, this book will give you a new found respect for the fears of vulnerability people like me go through! I gave the performance a low rating because I was not impressed with the narrator, her voice for Annie was perfect, spot on, in fact! But her delivery was way off, not to mention, the other characters she portrayed all sounded flat & very much the same. If you can get through that part though, the story is mind-blowing & will captivate you (no pun intended) from beginning to end!!

Good book

The music as chapter transitions was a little bit annoying but other than that, perfect

Great book AMAZING NARRATION

This was among, and perhaps is, King's most disturbing book. I didn't know how that could happen given the scope seemed to be fairly limited. But it's deep. And it's dark. Lindsay Crouse brings the character and the horror to life masterfully. If this narration could have been eligible for an Academy Award, it would have won.

Imagery at its finest

Misery takes you through a whirlwind of emotions and keeps you on edge throughout the entire book. It’s hard to find a book with as much imagery and detail as this one.
Lindsey Crouse did an excellent job with narration and has a spot on Kathy Bates interpretation.

Amazing

Because of the popularity of the novel I kind of knew what was going to happen but there were still plenty of surprises and details that I didn't know about. Overall an absolutely thrilling book. The woman reading does a great job changing her voice for each character. Would highly recommend.
