About this listen

The number one New York Times best seller about a famous novelist held hostage in a remote location by his “number one fan.” One of “Stephen King’s best…genuinely scary” (USA Today).

Best-selling novelist Paul Sheldon thinks he’s finally free of Misery Chastain. In a controversial career move, he’s just killed off the popular protagonist of his beloved romance series in favor of expanding his creative horizons. But such a change doesn’t come without consequences. After a near-fatal car accident in rural Colorado leaves his body broken, Paul finds himself at the mercy of the terrifying rescuer who’s nursing him back to health - his self-proclaimed number one fan, Annie Wilkes.

Annie is very upset over what Paul did to Misery and demands that he find a way to bring her back by writing a new novel - his best yet, and one that’s all for her. After all, Paul has all the time in the world to do so as a prisoner in her isolated house...and Annie has some very persuasive and violent methods to get exactly what she wants...

“King at his best...a winner!” (The New York Times)

“Unadulteratedly terrifying...frightening.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Classic King...full of twists and turns and mounting suspense.” (The Boston Globe)

Great book! Read by a great reader!

Lindsay Crouse really captured the insanity that is Annie Wilkes! This book scares me more than any other Stephen King book bc of the terror that you know Annie creates in Paul's mind! I read the book years ago then I recently listened to Lindsay read it... Great experience! (Both times) although Kathy Bates does a wonderful Annie the movie doesn't even come close to scaring me like the book. While I listened I pictured Kathy Bates for sure! I love her

A favorite

This is now the top of my list . I loved it. Story amazing, kept me on the edge of my seat!!! Narrator killed it, perfect for the story.... I agree with everyone else . Why did they put music in this. It wouldn’t have been bad if there was a rhyme or reason to it. After the first few minutes you’ll adjust and not even notice

Misery

The narrator was very good sounded just like Kathy Bates from the movie. I could have done without the cheesy music that popped up every now and then overall a Great Book

the audio is awesome

the story is well done and when bad things happen you feel a sense of fear as well. the sound actor really brings the two characters together going from somewhat sane to completely nuts

One of, if not THE best book I’ve ever read

As someone who has always been a big advocate of seeing the movie instead of reading the book, I can definitively say that this book blows the movie out of the water. The amount of detail and internal narration that is left out of the movie is the most encapsulating part of the book, and I believe a lot of the tone was lost when it was translated to film. The film was spectacular, but the book was mind-blowing.

One of my favorite books, great listen.

This is the third time I've bought Misery (I'm kind of a fan... although not the number one fan...). I keep giving it away to friends for them to read. When I read a review that said the narrator sounded like Annie in the movie I thought I would try listening to it this time around. She does sound like Annie and made the book that much more enjoyable! Some parts were less enjoyable hearing them read aloud - consider yourself warned.

I'm not a big reader but this book is FANTASTIC

Book had so many jumps and turns. What you think is safe and discreet is just thrown in your face with a deadly consequence.
