About this listen

After her foray into murder investigation, Lady Kiera Darby must journey to Edinburgh with her family so that her pregnant sister can be close to proper medical care. But the city is full of many things Kiera isn't quite ready to face: the society ladies keen on judging her, her fellow investigator (and romantic entanglement) Sebastian Gage, and ultimately, another deadly mystery. Kiera's old friend Michael Dalmay is about to be married, but the arrival of his older brother, William, has thrown everything into chaos. For ten years Will has been missing, committed to an insane asylum by his own father. Kiera is sympathetic, especially when rumors swirl about a local girl gone missing. Now Kiera must once again employ her knowledge of the macabre and join forces with Gage in order to prove the innocence of a beloved family friend.

Intense

Wow another suspense mystery with Keira and Gaye ending up together again.
Difficult topic of the asylums that people were put into during this timeframe. Usually not for the right reason

Wills story was heartbreaking and I just so badly wanted him to be able to live life again. You will have to read to find out who I am talking about.

Narration was perfect and this author is amazing as she pulls you into the story and does not let go.

Cannot wait until the next one

I am really enjoying this series of books. Ms. Huber has a traditional way of forming her books that keep you wondering to the end. I also like her characters.

Amazing

The plot has good turns one did not suspect and kept you guessing until the big reveal. I loved the first book and the second is a great companion to the series. It doesn't feel like a modern girl in a corset historical but still kept you on your toes.

Good Mystery

Mortal Arts is the second book in the Lady Darby series. Both books I’ve read are a bit odd, but I mean that in a good way. The main theme of this book seems to be trauma, especially Kiera’s continuing recovery from the abusive marriage with her now-deceased husband and William’s PTSD from the war and his horrific experiences in an asylum. There are some very serious moments in the book dealing with mental illness, but in a very compassionate yet unflinching way. But, it is still a mystery novel so that does take precedence. Sebastian Gage appears on scene to investigate and also as the love interest erratic in his attention and interaction.

The mystery is not complicated but it is well written. There are some period inconsistencies in language but they did not interfere with my enjoyment too much.

I listened to the audiobook. Heather Wilds did a very good job both in characterizations and interpretation. I feel she adds another element to the story.

Overall, I enjoyed Mortal Arts, and have already started the next in the series.

Storyline great, narration awful

I got the first of this series as part of a 2for1 sale and enjoyed the story enough to overlook the horrendous narration. I’ve had similar struggles with this book. Heather Wilds reads as if she’s a BBC News reporter. Every sentence ends with the same inflection and her choice of tone often clashes with the intent of the dialog or descriptions. At times the disconnect is so distracting I find myself correcting her in my mind. Due to this, I’m unsure if I will continue with the series.
