About this listen

Mattie Carver never thought she'd give up her small-town life to become one half of the best magic-smuggling duo in the business. Until recently, she didn't even know such a business existed. But as an unusually strong reliquary - able to carry vast quantities of magic in her body, undetected - she's been pulled into an underworld of organized crime and addictive enchantments. And although she's determined to keep things professional, her partner, Asa Ward, is a temptation she finds increasingly hard to resist.

Even as their relationship reaches a tipping point, Mattie is wary; Asa already told her he hates cages - literal or otherwise. But when an international black-market magic exchange goes awry, Asa falls into the hands of his enemies. Now, with the man who refuses to be controlled under the command of a ruthless captor, Mattie must decide how far she's willing to go to rescue him - assuming there's anything left to save.

Terrible ending - 1st book was best

The first book was SOO GOOD it sucked me in. The 2nd book was still ok, it went a little slower than the first one… but This 3rd book was the slowest and worst of all. Missed out on all of the Asa & Mattie dynamic and hot moments, which were part of what made book 1 so good… the story in book 3 went super slow and had a TERRIBLE ending. Honestly I should have stopped with the first book because it was so good. Seemed like the author was trying too hard with this one and lost sight of what made the first book so good. Should have stuck with the way they wrote the first book.

idk why…

i keep coming back to this series. i love it, i’ve listened to it several times. i just, i Hate how it ends. !!!
whyyy isn’t there More?! Sarah Fine, ur killin me, Smalls!!;)=)
sometimes i feel like Mattie is just Such an Idiot!! just bc she’s ‘small town’ shouldn’t make her so utterly stupid at times! and Asa… he’s the boy i loved so long ago… that boy is a man now and he’s so far out of my reach, and yet he’s there if i want him. so i do kinda get it, i just don’t Like it. don’t like that there isn’t a better resolution. i know there’s a graphic novel that’s book 4, but i don’t understand why it couldn’t be put out in novel and audible formats…

This Book Murdered The Series

If I had known where this story was going I would have stopped listening at Chapter 4. In fact, that’s exactly what I have done every time I’ve listened since the first time. Sometimes I listen to the last few chapters at the end, but mostly I don’t. I get this is the last book. I get why it’s the last book. Logically… it is right that it’s the last book. But I don’t want logic. I don’t want the way things should be. I want a long line of fictitious emotions and wants tied up in a pretty little unrealistic bow. If I wanted to emotionally experience loving someone who can’t love someone back I could have dug that shoe box out from the back of my closet and saved myself some money.

Can't Be the End! I Need More

First, the narrator is excellent, and I'm obsessed with Sarah Fine, as she is an incredible writer.

Now on to my review:

This is not the last book in the series. I don't accept that is the case, based on the ending. If it is, then my rating should lose a star.

However, despite Fine's penchant for trilogies, I don't think she's done with this series, which makes the end of book 3 completely logical and understandable. Fine has a way of ending series that is complete and satisfying, so I think perhaps this series needs 1 or 2 more books, as we don't seem to have come to the end of the Mattie's story.

I remain hopeful and will patiently wait for Fine to write book 4, even though that might not have been the publisher's original intention for this series.

I really hate Maddie

All I was doing the entire time I was listening to this book was saying SHE'S SO STUPID. So many times I had to hit fast forward just to get past the utter stupidity of Mattie. It was a great story line BUT I just wished the author would've had Mattie grown into more than just a poor pitiful woah is me with almost a whole chapter of terrible inner monologing type of girl. To sum it all up MADDIE ANNOYED THE CRAP OUTTA ME. But I really enjoyed the other characters tho. I read all 3 books and they all were great. If Maddie wasn't portrayed that way it would've been 5 stars across the board.

loved

I adore this story line and LOVE the Author.... I would most definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes gritty mythological characters that are seeded in the true legends of these creatures. . not the fluffy sparkle fairytale's of the present

Mixed Feelings :/

I absolutely loved this series. The concept was very original and entertaining. It kept me listening until the wee hours of the morning and I even kept my headphones in while grocery shopping! I was thinking this was one of the best series I've ever read.....until the END (even though I suspected it the whole time). If I knew there were going to be another book I wouldn't be so frustrated but since there's no talk of book 4 I'm assuming this was the end. I just feel kind of shorted by the way it ended. The whole book you're waiting on this reunion between the 2 MC'S and when it finally happens it's sad and depressing. I won't say too much because I don't want to ruin this for anyone but it's definitely not what I would have wanted. HOWEVER even despite this, I still highly recommend

Great Series!

I really hope the series has another book, but given that it's 2020 in this was released in 2016, it seems doubtful. I really enjoyed the series in audiobooks overall and there were many heart-rending portions to this book especially. However, I became increasingly frustrated with Mattie's character development. It is expected that a character should evolve over a series but Mattie and her naivety in the first book became supremely annoying obtuseness by this third book. Many of what were supposed to be great plot twists where also exceedingly obvious and disappointing.
I really like the world this author created and would like to see things redeemed in a fourth book.

I've read several of the Sarah Fine Series. This by far was my favorite, especially the third book. I hope they come out with more to this series.
