The New York Times best-selling author of New Leaf returns to Mystic Creek, Oregon, where a wounded heart finds a place to call home. After a career on the rodeo circuit, Ben Sterling longs to settle down on his farm and start a family like his brothers. He's searched all over for the woman of his dreams. Yet the only one to spark his interest is the new owner of the local cafe. Getting her attention, however, won't be easy.
Sissy Sue Bentley has worked hard to make it on her own, and she doesn't need another man in her life. From her alcoholic father to the men she's dated, who were after only one thing, they are nothing but trouble. Except Ben keeps showing up whenever she really needs help. Sissy struggles to deny her growing feelings for him-but soon Ben's tender concern has her hoping for a happier future. Then her past comes barreling back into her life, and it will take more than the love in Ben's heart to hold them together.

If I read this book as a stand-alone instead of a series, I would have rated it higher. But THREE books in a row with a battered woman theme is a bit much. I’m almost afraid to look at the next one.
And there is the part about the broken leg and the rat. Sissy has a badly broken leg and all she can think of is consummating her and Ben’s er... friendship? No one in pain, especially pain severe enough to require narcotics, is going to be that sexually aggressive. I might allow her the stray thought, “If I am going to be spending all this time in bed, I wish I had something more entertaining to do than heal a broken bone.“ But that’s about it.
The rat really got to me. So she thought it was cute and named it Snickers. Maybe if he were the only rat around and she had him nurtured, I’d considered letting him live, but when Ben found his nest, several rats ran out. Rats are vermin and have frequent large litters. They would over run the place in no time and have been impossible to keep out of the buildings. Who wants to go into a business with rats running around?
What about her precious chickens? Rats would be in the chicken feed and spreading disease — or lice — there.
Rats can do other damage. It would have served Ben right if Snickers or his friends had crawled up in his truck’s engine compartment and chewed out several thousand dollars worth of electrical wiring. Maybe that would have brought him to his senses. (I was sort of waiting for that to happen.)
Another battered woman and a rat
