About this listen

In the lean years following World War I, brash American adventuress Beryl Halliwell and prim and proper Brit Edwina Davenport form a private inquiry agency to make ends meet, hoping that crime does indeed pay...

The latest occurrence to disturb the peace in the quaint English village of Walmsley Parva hits rather too close to home - in fact, the prime suspect has taken up residence in Edwina's potting shed. Her elderly gardener Simpkins has been secretly sleeping there after a row with his disreputable brother-in-law and housemate, Hector Lomax.

When Hector is found murdered in the local churchyard, Constable Gibbs comes looking for Simpkins, who was last seen arguing with his kin in the pub the night before. Based on the sad state of her garden, Edwina has grave doubts that the shiftless Simpkins could muster the effort to murder anyone. The two sleuths throw themselves into weeding out suspects and rooting out the real killer.

But this is no garden variety murder. The discovery of a valuable ring, a surprise connection to Colonel Kimberly's Condiment Company, and a second homicide all force Beryl and Edwina to play catch-up as they relish the chance to contain the culprit . . .

When I picture Beryl, I see an American Joanna Lumley! The narrator does a very good job, though her gravelly voice makes me wish she would clear her throat. I've listened to a number of books Ms. Rosenblat performs and she reminds me my crazy Auntie Molly who's voice belied a lifetime of too many cigarettes & martinis. But at least she doesn't have one of those irritating, breathy whispering voices!

The story kept me engaged and was peppered with LOL moments throughout. As I said above, this is just great fun!

Lots of fun!

I liked the progression of the story and of course the characters. I do very much like the narrator‘s voice, it does sound like Kate Muldrew, but truthfully, I have trouble discerning the difference between the two ladies.
Highly recommended, this is a wonderful feel good. On a scale of one to 10 the cursing, sex and violence is around a one or at 1.5. I very much appreciate the more liberal attitude of Berryl.

My favorite in the series.

A book you can enjoy while you hands are otherwise occupied. Right number of characters, plot complex enough to hold your interest, but not so convoluted that you need a flowchart.

Barbara Rosenblat is one of the best narrators I’ve experienced. Is she really just one person?

A thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommend.

Performed! Not just read.
