About this listen

Gemma’s boots slip on uneven ground and her black cape catches in the wind as she runs. “Please, not Lucy,” she prays.

Nurse Gemma Tate is heartbroken when she hears that one of her young charges at the Foundling Hospital has been killed. She knows that police inspector Sebastian Bell will work tirelessly to uncover the truth, but obstructed by the curt matron, he’ll need her help navigating the cloistered world of the orphanage.

The mystery thickens when Sebastian finds a small wooden doll clutched in the murdered girl’s hand and Gemma hears whispers of a shadowy romance. But that isn’t the darkest secret hidden behind the high hospital walls. As time runs down on the investigation, Gemma won’t give up. But could the shocking discovery she makes be her last?

A gripping gaslit Victorian mystery, perfect for fans of Andrea Penrose, the Lady Sherlock mysteries, and Miss Scarlet and the Duke.

Liked the mystery, but it was slow to develop. Can't wait too read the next book in the series.

My goodness but this one moved slowly! Too much minutiae & detail. Though I loved the Crimea nursing connection, it was hard to keep plodding on. And could the romance between the inspector &!the nurse move any slower…? I think not.

I stuck it out to the end but it was sheer determination!

I love the Tate and Bell series! Great characters, interesting plots and slow burn romance. Excited for the 4th book.

Love the series

Great drama, mystery and intrigue as clues keep you listening intently trying to come up with all the possible endings that could be in store! Another great murder mystery by this very talented author, assisted by a spectacular narrator! Don't miss this one!

I have to admit the mysteries are very hard to figure out!

Gemma is pretty clever, and Inspector Bell owes her a lot lol. However the complete resistance of Every Single Character is getting old. Did people really not care about finding murderers and bringing them to justice? Ms Church’s spot on narration maybe is too spot on, haha, because I can’t take any more whiney obstacles to Bell’s investigations.

I listened to these first three all in a row. Glad there were no murdered unborn babies in this last story! Also no preview of the next story, which is fine with me lol.

I’m going to take a break for bit, but overall I like and am invested in the series.

Ms Shapiro writes very mysterious mysteries!

I love this authors twisted tales and this one didn’t disappoint. My only issue is with the awful narration - her male voices are horrible !

Another good story

Loved the plot line, fairly unpredictable however quite a few lose threads at the end and not the most satisfactory ending…

Kept me guessing!

I find the story overall very good. a bit dark and sad at the same time, keep wondering was England that horrible to live at those time? The narrator sometimes speaks with a little too much drama when it’s not necessary, especially when it’s a male character. Other than that I enjoyed listening to this book. Haze and Edmond is also one of my favorite

Nice story

Wonderful book, I feel like I time travel every time I listen. I only wish one loose end had turned out better. Poor Lucy.

Another hit!

Great storylines and thoughtful characters. This author is new to me and now a favorite. The narration is top notch. Looking forward to listening to more from the both of them.
