About this listen

Responding to an urgent plea from a troubled family friend, the Earl of Wrexford journeys to Oxford only to find the reclusive university librarian has been murdered and a rare manuscript has gone missing. The only clue is that someone overheard an argument in which Wrexford's name was mentioned.

At the same time, Charlotte—working under her pen name, A. J. Quill—must determine whether a laboratory fire was arson and if it's connected to the race between competing consortiums to build a new type of ship—one that can cross the ocean powered by steam rather than sails—with the potential to revolutionize military power and world commerce. That the race involves new innovations in finance and entrepreneurship only adds to the high stakes—especially as their good friend Kit Sheffield may be an investor in one of the competitors.

As they delve deeper into the baffling clues, Wrexford and Charlotte begin to realize that things are not what they seem. An evil conspiracy is lurking in the shadows and threatens all they hold dear—unless they can tie the loose threads together before it's too late . . .

I loved this book! It had so many twists and turns that I couldn’t predict the end until it was upon me. The historical and scientific background was quite interesting as well. Well worth the credit I spent.

Plot Twists Abound!

This is my 6th book in this series and I truly love how each builds on the next. Fun, English murder mysteries!

Great narrator!

I love the fact that there's more "mystery" and "crime solving" than murders in these books. There are murders, But they are more "civilized" than in other crime/mysteries I listen to. I needed something more civilized after a lot of far too horrid such books. So glad I've found this series which is fun to follow.

Love this series

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, but this one reads a bit like a history of the technological development of marine propulsion. There were times when I just zoned out and didn’t actually miss any of the story. Don’t get me wrong - I didn’t dislike the book - just thought it should have dwelt a little less on all the historical facts and details.
The narrator seems stilted, but maybe that would be helped by speeding up just a tiny bit.

A History of the Industrial Revolution

Love these stories! The characters, the dynamic and making a family together.
I’m always ready for the next adventure.

Next!

The story started off strong but the pacing was not good for the fourth act. That being said Charlotte’s character was not nearly as wimpy in this book as she was in the story when she first got married. She was essentially damseling all over the place in that one.

The weakest of the series
