Seen in isolation as a crime novel or a fantasy novel, there isn't much to be overly impressed about. However excellent narration makes the characters come to life, and that made the book well worth my time.

Excellent narration saves mediocre crime novel

The story is a well written but relatively generic murder mystery. The narration is the best part, they manage to do pretty distinct voices for all the characters.

Average story, fantastic narrator

Any additional comments?

This is Jasper’s story, a young man who becomes a retired magician’s assistant, set in the small town and farming suburbs of a small town. There are some magic and creature scenes but mostly it’s a pretty good mystery with murders to solve. They use mostly detective logic and it is well done.Good characters, kept me guessing, and a good ending. We don't need a sequel to finish the story but another would be welcome.

A good mystery
