About this listen
Recently retired Met Detective Roz Parker boards the Christmas Eve sleeper to head home for the holidays, anxious and dreading her new role as grandmother upon arrival. Violently thrown from her thoughts when the train derails, Roz finds herself stranded on the snowy tracks, where she finds a fellow passenger suspiciously murdered in a locked cabin.
With the train stuck in snow in the middle of nowhere, a killer stalks its carriages, picking off passengers one by one. Unexpected alliances emerge as the passengers realize that those who sleep on the sleeper train may never wake again. Can Roz identify the killer before anyone else is lost? And will she have to miss the birth of her first grandchild to solve the mystery?

The Christmas season has arrived in Lower Lockwood, and the Fairway Players are busy rehearsing their festive holiday production of Jack and the Beanstalk to raise money for a new church roof. But despite the season, goodwill is distinctly lacking among the amateur theater enthusiasts with petty rivalries, a possibly asbestos-filled beanstalk, and some perennially absent players behind the scenes. Of course, there’s also the matter of the dead body onstage. Who could possibly have had the victim on their naughty list?

DI Tom Stonem’s peaceful holiday is cut short when a body is discovered nearby, in the shadow of the Angel of the North. The dead man is bound, his arms outstretched in the sculpture’s iconic pose. In the man’s pocket is what appears to be a little girl’s Christmas list, with the first item – 1. Angel delight – crossed off. When a second body is found – a woman, stabbed in the abdomen after her work Christmas do – Stonem can’t help but notice a grim connection between the crime scenes and the items on the seemingly innocent list. 2. Red party dress. Could this be a murderer’s twisted code?

It is just their luck for him to be found dead the morning after Christmas day, dressed in his Santa Claus costume, seemingly poisoned by his favourite chocolates. Not as advertised
I thought I would love it, but turns out while it is an ok mystery, it felt like the author was more interested in the social issues that disturb her. While worthwhile topics not sure it it should be advertised as a Christmas mystery.

A bit outside my comfort zone
I usually read golden age mysteries that are entertaining, but don’t often stick with me for very long after I finish them. This book was much more serious and gave me a lot to think about, that being said it was definitely not a cozy Christmas mystery, Serious trigger warnings for sexual assault and birthing trauma.
