About this listen

A high school reunion takes a deadly turn in the second in A. L. Herbert's fresh and inventive series set within the bustle of a top soul food restaurant - the first cozy mystery series with a predominantly African-American cast.

When the organizing committee for her upcoming high school reunion desperately needs a caterer, Halia agrees to help out. Soon she's serving up her signature macaroni and cheese and famous chicken wings to a host of appreciative ex-classmates. Some folks have blossomed since graduation. Others, like manipulative Raynell Rollins, currently married to a former football star, haven't changed nearly enough.

When Raynell is found dead the morning after the reunion, the role call of possible suspects could fill the school gymnasium. Extramarital affairs, mega-church scandals and sports secrets...Raynell had her perfectly manicured hand in a lot of sticky situations. With her cousin Wavonne's bungling assistance - and a helping of unwelcome dating advice from her mother, Celia - Halia is on course to track down the killer, before she becomes the alumna most likely to meet an untimely end...

The storyline

Best storyline ever. I was on edge listening to every word. This is the second book I’ve read and enjoyed.

Great story with a funny and entertaining plot!

You will go from laughing to scratching your head for answers with this story. It has none of those roll your eyes moments when the characters do something silly or unusual to forward the plot. Instead the characters are genuine and believable, but still move the plot forward. It's a book that really holds your attention. Although it takes awhile to get to the main plot, the subplots are just as entertaining. It's a fun read.

Another 5 Star Listen

I love the main character Halia and her approach to solving these mysteries. Machelle Williams does a fantastic job narrating the characters even the annoying and bothersome Wavonne.

Home Run

This one was just as good as the first audio. Wavonne didn't disappoint, she's actually quite entertaining. So glad I don't have a relative like her. 😁 Halla's mystery style solving skills would be comparable to something like Murder She Wrote TV series back in the day. I like the her corny skills, she should be getting a kick back from PG County police department. 😃 Overall, another good, onto the next series!

It is a fun book.

It is not serious literature, but it is very enjoyable. Sometimes a second book disappoints, this one did not.
